Today we’d like to introduce you to Benik & Philip Motevosian.
Hi Benik & Philip, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our story really began from two very different career paths that ultimately converged.
Phil started over a decade ago as a laboratory technologist in a local toxicology lab. Over the years, he gained experience across a variety of specialties, which gave him a multidisciplinary perspective on the laboratory industry. While he enjoyed the science, he also became increasingly aware of the inefficiencies and frustrations that seemed to plague labs everywhere.
Meanwhile, Benik had retired after more than 40 years in aerospace and defense. Post-retirement, his goal was simple—spend more time with his kids and grandkids while exploring new opportunities. He first worked with his oldest son in automotive sales and marketing, then with his middle son in marketing and artificial intelligence. Eventually, he moved to Texas with his youngest son to be closer to his grandchild.
It was here that Benik witnessed Phil’s frustrations first-hand as he navigated the laboratory world. With a background in quality management systems and ISO standards, Benik recognized a recurring issue: although labs are required to maintain quality management systems, most relied on generic binders of policies written by third parties, with little real integration or usability. He became curious—why were labs still struggling with the same systemic problems? That curiosity led him to develop software rooted in ISO principles, which became the foundation of QMSPAD.
Once the software was built, the next step was to test it. Around that time, Phil was at a crossroads in his career, and the idea of starting their own laboratory began to take shape. They stumbled across a building for lease, and that marked the first step toward launching Encompass Diagnostics. Initially, they used third-party software to run operations, but it quickly became clear that those systems were clunky and inefficient. This pushed them to create their own laboratory information system—Nuculis—with the goal of simplifying and streamlining the process.
But their vision didn’t stop there. Drawing on decades of continuous improvement, they asked themselves: how could they take this further? The answer was RxMDx, a platform that automates treatment recommendations in a seamless, effortless way. By incorporating APIs and building connectivity between diagnosis, treatment, and quality systems, RxMDx takes laboratory operations and patient care to the next level.
In short, what started as a father and son tackling frustrations in the lab industry has evolved into building an ecosystem of solutions—combining Phil’s scientific expertise with Benik’s systems-driven problem solving—to make laboratories smarter, faster, and more effective.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road.
For Phil, one of the toughest seasons came in 2018, when he was laid off three times in less than a year due to startup laboratories failing. Those setbacks forced him to take a step back at times, but they also gave him perspective. Instead of staying boxed into roles that limited growth, he used those moments to reposition himself for opportunities that would open new doors and allow him to advance.
For Benik, the greatest challenge was financing. The process required more than two and a half years of investment with no income, which was a real test of perseverance. While the technical side—creating, programming, and applying quality management systems—came naturally thanks to his lifelong background in engineering and ISO standards, the financial strain was by far the hardest part.
Through it all, what carried them forward was their shared drive and a commitment to continuous improvement. The obstacles, while difficult, ultimately sharpened their vision and fueled the solutions they’ve built today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Encompass Diagnostics – Independent Diagnostic Laboratory. INVOPAD LLC – Consultancy, Distribution, Software?
At Encompass Diagnostics and Invopad, we’re proud to do things differently. From day one, we’ve built a culture that prioritizes quality and compliance over profits. That philosophy shapes everything we do—our processes, our technology, and our relationships with providers and patients.
We specialize in infectious disease and toxicology testing, but what truly sets us apart is how deeply quality is ingrained into our foundation. Our quality management system is built on ISO 15189 guidelines, and rather than treating compliance as a checklist, we’ve woven it into our daily operations, our staff training, and our culture as a whole.
Another defining aspect of our work is customization. We collaborate directly with providers to design custom panels and workflows that meet their patients’ specific needs, and we generate custom reports to ensure clarity, relevance, and better outcomes.
Innovation has also been central to our journey. Frustrated by the limitations of third-party systems, we built our own Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) so that we could maintain full control and visibility over our operations. Similarly, we developed our own AI platform, RxMDx, which provides automated therapeutic guidance for infectious diseases. These tools ensure we’re not at the mercy of external vendors and can continuously improve in ways that directly benefit our clients and their patients.
What we’re most proud of, brand-wise, is that we’ve created more than just a lab—we’ve created a model of how a lab can and should operate. One that is innovative, collaborative, and rooted in quality. At the end of the day, we want readers to know that our mission isn’t just to run tests—it’s to transform the way laboratories serve healthcare providers and their patients.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Yes—we’re excited to share that by the end of October, we’ll be offering reflexive Phenotypic Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing for our UTI and wound care patients.
What makes this significant is that our platform combines genotypic identification with phenotypic resistance testing for the specific pathogens detected. In other words, we’re bridging a long-standing gap in molecular diagnostics by providing both rapid identification and true antibiotic susceptibility.
The result is faster, more actionable answers for healthcare providers and better outcomes for patients. It’s an advancement we’re proud to bring to our community, and it reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation, quality, and patient care.
