Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Myers of Historic Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Myers.

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In October 1981 a small group of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary students gathered at a Dunkin’ Donut shop to pray before going to the Fort Worth Water Gardens to share coffee and donuts with the homeless who were sleeping there. Within a few weeks a weekly ministry was started for the homeless who lived on the streets of Fort Worth. After a while, the students decided they needed to provide more, so we made sandwiches to serve along with the donuts and coffee. In 1985 we acquired an old church building at 1709 East Hattie, serving two meals a day and having worship services every day for the poor and homeless. In 2016 we built a large ministry center/gym. We have also acquired two homes for men’s and women’s discipleship homes. We have gone from serving donuts and sandwiches in the park to serving at least 200 folks two meals a day seven days a week. We believe that Beautiful Feet Ministries was not a plan devised by any person, but that it was birthed out of the heart of God for the needy.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always struggles, but Mike and I feel such a calling to the poor and homeless that it is pure joy to serve here! In the early days, we both worked outside jobs and finances were a struggle. But now we are able to minister here full time with an awesome staff. We have been so blessed!!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Beautiful Feet ministers to the poor and homeless. We have a daily soup kitchen, serving two hot meals a day. We also have no-cost medical and dental clinics which help so many in the area. We have classes for inner city, at-risk youth and children on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. We have a clothing ministry on Sundays in which we give clothing to the needy. We also have facilities for the homeless to take showers and have their laundry done. We also have two awesome Christmas outreaches. On the second Friday night of December, we go Christmas caroling on hayrides throughout the inner city neighborhoods, praying for families and giving gifts away. We have had up to 2000 volunteers go out with us on this special night of outreach and Christmas cheer. On the third weekend of December, we give gifts and food boxes to families who have applied for assistance for Christmas gifts.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Pray! Pray! Pray! This ministry is based on prayer. And have a vital relationship with the Lord. If He is calling you to do something, He will provide and guide you.
