Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Johnson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After more than 10 years of thinking about creating a skin care line, I decided to put aside excuses and go for it. My husband formulates and manufactures skin care products for his family owned business and I often shared my desire with him to develop products. I always felt discouraged when I would apply lotions and creams to my body and the hydration lasted about 5 minutes if I was lucky.
My husband started making a few body butters for me to try and I became obsessed with how moisturized my skin felt. I am a big fan of exfoliating and hydrating so I knew, I wanted to create a line that centered around that concept for the body and lips. The reality of Skin Snob took off from there. All skin ages… not just the skin on our faces.
It’s as important to nourish the skin that covers our bodies. We have created a product line that is formulated with clinically tested ingredients and it’s great for all skin types. We are snobs about our skin feeling soft and hydrated and it’s our philosophy that we should all be skin snobs. We can’t take our skin for granted… it’s all we have. My friend, Mimi, joined me in this exciting adventure and together we have accomplished our dream of becoming entrepreneurs. It’s our brand. Our passion. We love it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We created Skin Snob on our own. The thought was scary and intimidating. I think the thinking process behind starting any new journey can frighten you out of following through but once you do it, it’s an amazing feeling.
It’s hard work but at the same time so fulfilling. We balance our personal life with our business life. I have four children and they are very familiar with body butter now. They are happy for me and I think it has shown them that no matter who you are or what you do, you are capable of attaining your goals if you put your mind to it.
Currently, my partner and I run everything ourselves. We take care of sales, shipping, marketing, social media and everything else involved with Skin Snob. It’s just the two of us and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Well until we get huge, of course! We just celebrated Skin Snob’s first anniversary and we are happy with where we are at. Without a doubt, we have huge aspirations for Skin Snob and we will keep working to get there.
what should we know about Skin Snob? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our line isn’t your typical body care line. The products smell great but they actually work. They nourish and hydrate your skin with anti-aging benefits. When using Skin Snob, you are feeding your skin with vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients that work to give you a healthier, glowing skin. Our packaging may look girlish but don’t be fooled. Men use it too! We developed these products and we really love sharing our passion for them.
I am so proud of the fact that we have created a following. Whether people purchase on line or in one of the spas or boutiques on our retailer list, they come back for more. We have had excellent feedback on our products and that makes me over the moon!
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Luckily, our industry is geared towards females. There’s a lot of scams out there and I think people assume because you are a female entrepreneur and new to the industry that you are clueless. I have had a few “sweet words” for these people. Contrary to popular belief, we have brains and the scams have been unsuccessful for these people.
Sometimes being a woman, you just feel like you can’t be taken seriously. Keep pushing on anyways!
