Today we’d like to introduce you to Samina Hussain.
Samina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have a Masters in Mass Communication, and have written about health and education. I’ve always had a natural rapport with children and genuinely love spending time and talking with them. Kumon seemed ideal to me where I could pursue both my passions nurturing children and education.
I was undergoing training when I got pregnant with my oldest. I was doing so much Math then, I swear he came out knowing math. He’s a mechanical engineer now and loves to read. He’s always recommending books to me.
As for my younger one, he could test out of all his math classes in college.
I became a believer of the Kumon Method.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
All in all it has been pretty smooth sailing!!
During Covid it got rough! I was doing zoom literally from 7 to 7 daily except weekends, delivering work to my students’ homes. Making sure everyone stayed on task.
Working with the little ones was tough, making them focus while working with them on zoom was a struggle.
I had to come up with creative ways to make them do their Kumon.
We’ve been impressed with Kumon Math and Reading Center of Addison, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kumon in the largest after school math and reading program for students ranging from 3 yrs old all the way to high school.
You are never too young or old to learn, I have had adults do the program too.
I have students join the program for different reasons, enrichment, remedial, help with time management and organizational skills, SAT/ACT prep, etc. Most of my students work ahead of grade level, some as much as four or five years ahead of their grade level.
It’s for anyone and everyone who wants to learn. It’s based on the old maxim “Practice makes Perfect.”
Students come to class either once or twice a week to class and get work to practice at home daily. Everything they do has to be completed within a time goal. It’s a mastery of concepts program.
My proudest moment was when Luis, joined the program as a high schooler. He had cerebral palsy, could not read or write.
After about two years in the program he was reading stories, writing sentences and feeling so proud of himself.
He kept amazing me.
His mom was excited with his progress, with tears in eyes she told me that Luis feels he has a purpose now. And wants to find a job.
I absolutely love the program; I have seen students from disliking Math to excelling in it. Reading students with Dyslexia, test out of their dyslexic program in school. Students scoring a perfect score on their SAT’s.
I feel if I can develop confidence and self-motivating skills in my students so that they can do their work independently, I have done my job.
You need math and reading for everything and Kumon provides that. Rapport with the Kumon Instructor is also important.
If the Student, Parent and Instructor on the same page students will always soar high.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I used to operate my business from a church with very little overheads when I first started my Kumon business.
I was there for about ten years. After a lot of pondering and contemplation I decided to move to a retail space.
This was a huge risk as my expenses were going to increase tenfold. We had some unanticipated costs like buildup costs, compliance with inspection, city ordinances…
