Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamaya Wright.
Hi Tamaya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I developed a love for gardening during Covid times, after having a little too much time on my hands. I attempted a few other hobbies before I asked my mother to come help me start a container garden in my backyard, since she was already an experienced gardener. As I begin to cultivate my garden and join gardening groups, I heard many stories where friends and family were left to tend to gardens/plants during vacations, but gardeners returned from vacations with wilted and crispy plants. All gardeners and plant moms are family so I felt bad for them when hearing those stories. One day as I was studying the Bible, garden sitter popped in my spirit. Next thing I know, I was going through the proper steps so that I can be of service for all the gardeners and plant moms that were in need. That’s how Garden Sitter DFW was developed and now my team and I can be your plant aunties!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think as many small businesses, there are ups and downs. In the beginning, being the owner, operator, and working a full-time job was very taxing. Along with taking care of my daughter and helping other family members. I sacrificed and still do, a lot of sleep to ensure I can care for gardens during the time of day that will keep the garden healthy. There is also a lot of trial and error. Every customer I service teaches me the tools I need to keep available and how to go about servicing the next customer. I learned the hard way that everyone doesn’t have patio lights and a water hose lol.
We’ve been impressed with Garden Sitter DFW, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Garden Sitter DFW is a plant/garden care service based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, specializing in keeping plants healthy and thriving while their owners are away. What was your favorite childhood memory?
I know this may be kind of random but my favorite childhood memory was when I was about 12 and the two things I wanted for Christmas most was a Newborn Jennifer doll and a George Foreman Fat Reducing Grilling Machine. Better known as the Newborn Jennifer and George Foreman Grill. I use to watch the infomercials all night. Those are the two things that were not under the tree, as much as I wanted to be grateful for everything else, I was disappointed. Hours later my mom realized she didn’t put them out because she never wrapped them and forgot about them. I was sooooo excited! This was before there were skits doing the same thing! I even did this with a Nintendo Switch when my daughter was 11. But I got laugh because it was intentional!!
