Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Myers.
Hi Meredith, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved animals of all shapes and sizes ever since I was a little girl. Growing up in Colorado, I started pet sitting for friends and neighbors with the help of my parents, and as I got older, I added dog walking to the mix. When my family moved to Texas in 2010, I kept that love for animals close to me.
In 2018, I signed up with Rover.com to earn a little extra money. After about a year, I realized I preferred the freedom of working independently, so I began pet sitting for clients outside of Rover, as well as for family, friends, and neighbors. Word of mouth kept me busy, and eventually I decided to make it official—I came up with a name, built a website, designed business cards, and even added magnetic signs to my car. After a couple of name changes, Bow Wows and Meows Pet Sitting and Home Care was born.
Over time, my little pet-sitting business grew steadily. It’s still a small operation, but it’s mine, built from the ground up with love and my passion for animal care. Now, I’m focusing on building a bigger online presence so I can connect with even more pet parents and their furry family members.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Along the way, I’ve developed health conditions like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), which have challenged me to find new ways to keep providing the same level of quality care I always have. Some years, I make next to nothing; other years, I do better than before. The inconsistency can be tough, but it’s also pushed me to keep learning and adapting.
Right now, I’m still figuring out the best marketing techniques, diving into SEO tools, and working on getting my business more visibility online. Since my operation is still small, it’s not a steady source of income yet, so I also still work the average everyday job while continuing to grow this passion of mine. I’m also going to school to finish my degree. It’s a balancing act, but one that’s worth it because caring for animals has always been at the heart of who I am.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I treat every pet like my own and give them tons of love. I mostly care for dogs and cats, but I’ve watched all kinds of critters over the years; I currently have a client who has chickens! I usually stay at the owner’s place since I don’t have room to board pets at my house right now. This allows pets to stay in a familiar environment, keeping their routines and comfort intact. That’s important to me.
I also try to keep my rates reasonable. Pet care, especially in this area, can be super pricey, and I don’t want clients or potential clients stressing about the bill. I want to give pets great care and give their owners peace of mind, knowing their pets are in good hands without breaking the bank.
People say I’m reliable, careful, and treat their pets like family. I love sending pet parents pics and updates so they know their furry buddies are safe, happy, and well-cared for. I’m really proud of building this business myself. With people spreading the word, sticking with it, and loads of love, it’s turned into something truly mine.
My overall goal is to continue growing until I can do this full-time. Caring for animals has always been my passion, and building a career around it is what I’m working toward every day.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the pet care industry will keep getting bigger and hopefully better over the next 5-10 years. A report I found online recently said that the pet sitting worldwide market should hit $5.14 billion by 2030. That’s like an 11.8% increase each year from 2025 to 2030! This is all happening because people treat pets more like family, spend more money on them, and like getting pet stuff delivered through subscriptions.
Because pet owners see their animals as family, they want quality care that also feels personal. So, more people are looking for things like in-home pet sitting so their pets can stay where they are most comfortable while their family travels.
I think the pet care industry will keep doing well as owners look for quality care that is personal and fun for their furry friends.
