Hi Abdul Hakeem, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our Story
We’re a family that loves to travel, discover new places, and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food and great company. What started as a passion for hosting people and sharing memorable treats naturally evolved into Dessert Avenue.
We began by doing pop-up events around the DFW area for a couple of years, connecting with our community and refining our vision. Eventually, we decided it was time to create a permanent space where people could truly experience what we love most — premium-quality desserts, single-origin coffee, a curated tea bar, and artisanal ice cream — all under one roof.
At Dessert Avenue, we focus on providing a balanced taste that delights the palate while being easy on gastronomy, ensuring every bite feels as good as it tastes. Our goal goes beyond just serving desserts; it’s about creating an experience rooted in warmth, hospitality, and genuine connection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road — like any new venture, there were plenty of ups and downs along the way. Since this was our first experience in the food and beverage industry, we had to learn everything from the ground up. From understanding operations and sourcing quality ingredients to perfecting our recipes and service, it’s been a continuous journey of education, adaptation, and growth. Every challenge, though, has helped shape Dessert Avenue into what it is today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The transition into this industry wasn’t easy — after spending over 12 years in the corporate world, it was a big shift. But my compassion for people, attention to detail, and drive to create something meaningful helped guide the journey.
At Dessert Avenue, I take pride in building a team that grows together and shares the same passion for quality and hospitality. We’re deeply committed to our community and believe in giving back whenever we can.
What truly sets us apart is our uncompromising focus on quality and consistency — every product and every experience matters. I also value constructive feedback, as it helps us continuously improve and get better at what we do every single day.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’ve definitely learned that every meaningful journey comes with risk. When we started Dessert Avenue, we began with bare minimum capital, and the project slowly snowballed as we worked toward bringing our vision to life. Looking back, if I had known the total investment it would take by the time we officially opened, I might have second-guessed or delayed the decision.
But taking that leap — despite the uncertainty — was one of the best and scariest choice I’ve made. It taught me that sometimes you don’t need to have everything figured out; you just need the courage to start and the persistence to keep going.
