Today we’d like to introduce you to Chey Dawn.
Hi Chey , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello! My name is Chey Dawn and I’m a model, actress, photographer and music artist in DFW. I started modeling 9 years ago when my best friend first took my photos professionally. After that, I couldn’t get enough. I modeled and did photography full-time for several years while finishing up my degree in Print and Digital Journalism at the University of North Texas where I fine tuned my photography skills. After I graduated I launched my first business with that very same best friend who took my pictures so many years prior. Since then I’ve branched into music and acting as well. I’ve released three singles on Spotify (and any where you can stream) under the artist name DAWN. My most recent song is called LOTTERY and the music video is also on YouTube. I also just had an acting roll for the Texas Horror Cult Oner challenge where I play a fun character named Jessica. I plan to continue creating through all these different avenues!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, I feel like nothing worth working towards is rarely easy. In the early days I was overcoming being a short model. This was back when that was way less normal. It felt like I had to fight harder to prove my worth but it ended up in me walking in runaways, scoring brand photo shoots and partnerships and so much more. Now, I feel like I’m fighting different standards. I am covered in tattoos and am rarely spotted without brightly colored hair (unless it’s a wig, haha). So now I have to fight the stereotypes of proving that I can be just as good for a campaign or film even with my alternative look. I don’t plan on letting it stop me! The creative path in general can be filled with comparisons and constant judgment but over the years I’ve been learning to trust myself and my vision more and more.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a model, photographer, actress and music artist. I would say I’m most known for modeling and photography as I’ve been doing it for much longer. But in recent years I’ve started singing and acting more as well. I would say that something that sets me apart is years of experience in front, behind and around the camera. I’ve done everything from set design, PA work, assistant directing, styling, makeup and more. I have a lot of variety in my skill set and the looks I can pull off. I always feel most proud when I create something that is beautiful and is a team project. I love getting to be creative with others and meet new people in the community.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Getting to create with people from all walks of life and skill sets. I love getting to work with new people as much as I do veterans in the craft. I feel like there is something to learn from everyone.
