We recently had the chance to connect with Amanda Dalton and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
For the first time ever, I am an executive producer on a music album. The second album for Smoking With Strangers called Don’t Disappear by Jay Sustain. It’s been so fun being a part of an artistic project that was different than Dance.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I own Amanda Dalton school of Dance. We offer dance education for ages three through adult in classical studies of ballet, jazz, tap, musical theater , hip hop and contemporary. I truly specialize in working with the tiny ballerinas ages 3 to 8.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Dance Teacher’s Maggie Dickey and Joee Shapiro spotted me at a very young age. I knew from the time I was nine years old that I wanted to be in the dance world. I didn’t know at what capacity, but I knew that I was happiest when I was in the dance studio. Both Miss Maggie and Miss Joee took me under their wing and gave me priceless information and guidance on the professional dance world.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
In my mid 40s, I had a slump in my life and felt very low and unmotivated. After pursuing dance since a young age by the time I got to my mid 40s I felt very disconnected from it , from an emotional standpoint. When I stopped using dance technically and started using dance emotionally, I began to heal my wounds. Sometimes it’s easier for a dancer to move their body instead of speaking words, the body can say a lot.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Being in control 😆 no seriously! That’s probably when I’m at my happiest when I’m in complete control , although we all know, life is not built that way
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I touched lives through dance . Whether I was a teacher to them or a performer, I’m hoping that I leave a lasting impact on my students /audience emotionally. As an artist, I hope to make people “feel” .
