Meet Lindsay and Brandon Lutz of Lutz Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay and Brandon Lutz.

Lindsay and Brandon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The story behind Lutz Studios starts all the way back in September of 2016. Some friends of ours asked us if we wanted to film their wedding. We looked at each other and smiled. It had been two years since we had worked on a project together, and at this time in our life, our hearts had been captured by other pursuits. That night when we were trying to make our decision, we gathered our hodge-podge of camera equipment, and thought to ourselves, “We can make it work!” We only had one functioning camera at the time… We told them yes, and didn’t look back.

At this point in our relationship, Brandon and I had only worked on two projects together. One in film school that Brandon wrote, and I was his assistant director. And another short film we completed together on a mission trip to Belize. We were getting back to what brought us together in the first place.

This beautiful November wedding in 2016 opened up a door for us we didn’t even know existed. We started to dream about what it would look like to grow together, work together, and serve together. The more we dreamt about it, the more excited we became. One Sunday afternoon, we sat down at the only local Starbucks in our tiny town, and we put into words the heart of our business.

Three things stood out:
1. We wanted to reconnect and grow stronger in our marriage. We connected in the beginning through creative things, and we have always been stronger when we are creating together.
2. We reminded ourselves that people are important. More important than the photos that we capture are the lives our couples are starting together. We want to create an environment that cultivates community and support as our brides and grooms enter into a new season!
3. We decided we wanted to capture photos you are proud to hang on your walls. Photos you are excited to show your future children and the generations that follow. These are family heirlooms that will always be precious.

We look back at 2017 as a year of growth. We met other beginners as well as established business owners. We invested in our own education. We made the commitment that we would run our small business like we live our lives. We were going to be 100% ourselves and our success wouldn’t be defined by others but by the goals we had set.

For us, success looks like this: spending more time together, growing in genuine relationships with other creatives and our brides and grooms, and capturing joy-filled moments for others. It takes a lot of hard work. And we aren’t perfect. But, we always choose to show ourselves a little grace as we take the time to figure it out. We have learned a lot about ourselves in the last 2 years and have made many friends that we are so grateful for. We look into 2018 excited and hopeful.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Learning to work as a team with two strong-willed individuals has taken time. By no means have we arrived. Two individuals, one business, one marriage. It takes patience, grace, and the willingness to evaluate ourselves and where we could be loving and serving one another better. Many small business owners know that when you have a family business, personal and business matters are all mixed together, especially when you are a husband-wife team. It takes sacrifice on both ends to commit to a healthy marriage and healthy business.

There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to running your own business. You don’t know what you don’t know, and our ignorance can cause us to make mistakes that we never knew where mistakes. We feel so grateful for the community of other photographers and business owners that have shared their knowledge, experience, and wisdom with us.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lutz Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
We love capturing joy-filled brides and grooms that spend the day celebrating their relationship, family, and the beginning of their next adventure! We love shooting weddings, families, and videos. We are always wanting to capture real moments that are playful and intimate. Our style is natural and bright and reflects who people are.

What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
Right now, I would say we are in the “growing” phase of business. We want to set ourselves up to serve as many couples and people as we can! So we don’t have any concrete plans for the future. Our only plan is to love and serve the people around us. We look forward to meeting other creatives in the wedding industry as well as building up those relationships and friendships beyond just working together. We are always looking for ways to give to our city by partnering with other local and small businesses to help add value to whatever their craft is.
