Hi Allison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Fireflies have long been symbols of hope and quiet light in the dark—tiny sparks that remind us change is possible, even in the heaviest moments. That simple image inspired the name Firefly Counseling & Consulting.
Our founder, Allison Cornell, LPC-S, envisioned a practice where healing and professional growth could happen side by side. After more than 15 years working with children, teens, adults, and fellow therapists, she saw how people thrive when they feel both seen and supported.
Firefly began as a small private practice focused on trauma-informed therapy, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Over time it grew into a collaborative space that offers:
Individual & Family Therapy – grounded in evidence-based care and a belief in each person’s innate resilience.
Consultation & Supervision – helping new counselors and seasoned clinicians alike deepen their skills and stay ethically grounded.
Community Education & Training – because mental health thrives when knowledge is shared.
Our mission is simple: to guide people toward clarity, healing, and connection—one conversation, one session, one spark at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many small practices, Firefly faced early hurdles—balancing clinical care with business demands, navigating insurance changes, and growing a team while preserving our supportive culture. Each obstacle ultimately strengthened our commitment to providing trauma-informed care and mentoring new clinicians.
We’ve been impressed with Firefly Counseling and Consulting Waco PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Allison Cornell is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and EMDRIA-Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant with over 15 years of experience as an LPC and school counselor. She completed EMDR Basic Training in 2022 and has pursued additional training in supervision, trauma and dissociation.
Allison has worked with a diverse range of clients, including teachers, lawyers, therapists, veterans, first responders, couples, adolescents, and children. She brings a warm yet directive approach to both EMDR therapy and consultation, and she specializes in treating PTSD, dissociation, complex trauma, sexual abuse, perfectionism, panic, depression, and anxiety.
She takes a holistic approach to treatment and values collaboration with other providers in her community—including functional medicine practitioners, trauma-informed massage therapists, dietitians, and psychiatrists—to support comprehensive, whole-person care.
Allison is also the co-founder of EMDR with Dani & Ally.
At EMDR with Dani & Ally, our vision is to foster a thriving community of compassionate, skilled EMDR clinicians who are deeply confident, ethically grounded, and clinically empowered. Through collaborative consultation, expert guidance, and authentic connection, we strive to elevate the standard of trauma-informed care—one clinician at a time. Danielle and Allison offer consultation groups for clinicians as well as trainings. Our unique, collaborative approach sets us a part.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many practices add trauma services later. Firefly began with EMDR and trauma-informed care as its foundation, making it a core identity rather than an add-on.
One surprising thing about Firefly Counseling is how quickly it has grown. I give all the credit to God for guiding this journey—He has brought an incredible team of clinicians my way, and I am deeply grateful for each and every one of them.
