Meet Lyric Nidaé of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyric Nidaé.

Hi Lyric, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Lyric Nidaé, and my love for performing, singing, acting, and dancing began when I was just a small child. Although my dream to share it with the world bloomed slowly, like a flower in a garden.

My first memories of performing took place in church, where I was a praise dancer in my earliest years. I found dancing to be fun, but the true love began to grow when I had my first singing audition for the Youth Church Choir. I remember the first song being “He’s Able”.

My joy for performing truly grew when I saw my older brother performing as well. Whether it was seeing him sing, act, or dance, I always felt so inspired. When I was in Elementary school, he was in Middle school doing a production of Hairspray as the Character Seaweed. My younger self was in absolute awe seeing my older brother take on a whole new character and persona. The music, the moves, the story, I wanted to be a part of it.

I began to develop a passion of my own, where performing wasn’t just something I did for fun, but because I truly loved it.

When I got to Middle school, I did my first musical theatre performance of Beauty and the Beast, where I played the role of Mrs. Potts. I went on to do many more performances, both singing and acting, but I loved it when I could intertwine the two and do musicals!

In the earlier stages of my growing desire to perform, especially sing, I began to face difficulties with my voice. My voice was often raspy, hoarse, or nearly completely gone, which made it very hard to talk, let alone sing. We eventually had to get it checked out after it went on for a while. I had a laryngoscopy done, nothing was found, but the problems continued. Whereas it could’ve been very discouraging, I did not let it slow me down and continued to sing whenever I could. With time, work, and age, it faded away and grew into the voice that I have today.

One of the most important places to mention throughout my journey is the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. Every year from ages 10-18, I would spend my summer right in the heart of Downtown Dallas. doing their summer intensives, to master’s programs, to Broadway Dreams! From performing in the Riverfront Jazz festival to now having my own upcoming Solo show! Under the Mentorship of Curtis King and all of our instructors, I have experienced tremendous growth in my voice, discipline, and confidence year after year that I will carry with me forevermore.

As middle school came to an end, I knew I wanted to be in an environment where I could really hone my skills and be around other like minded creatives who wished to do the same, so I auditioned for Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. I was accepted into the Theatre Conservatory and began my four Year journey in 2020, the height of Covid and online schooling. For a lot of students, online classes were not ideal, but for Arts students, it felt especially unnatural to do artistic collaborative work virtually. Through it, we found new and innovative ways to make the experience flow and feel a bit easier.

While at school, I was working on my acting, but in my time at home, I spent a lot of it singing and working on my vocal skills. Learning new songs, studying the greats, my favorites, and posting singing covers online. Then, eventually, I tried my hand at Songwriting. Songwriting is where the true magic began, and where I found who I really am. I started to see myself more and more as an artist as I created music that was true to me. With each song i wrote, I felt more aligned a sure of what I wanted to pursue.

It was at that time that I came up with the name Lyric Nidaé. Lyric is my birth name, given to me by my mother, but I created the Artist name Lyric Nidaé

In my senior year, we did the musical Hairspray!! That being the show that sparked my own love for musical theatre, then being how I closed out my High school experience was such a full circle moment. I auditioned for and played the role of Motormouth Maybelle, and was beyond excited to play such an impactful character! A character vocal about injustice, social issues, and self-love. I grew so much through the character, and so much through my 4 years at Booker T. I’m proud and grateful to say that I am a 2024 graduate.

After graduation, I continued my studies and took them all the way to New York, where I studied Acting for the Camera/film. With me on the East coast and my brother on the West coast in LA, it’s most important to say that my brother and I would not have made it nearly as far without my Mother. At the slightest mention or sight of any passion of ours, she is ready to support and cheer us on the loudest; She is truly our biggest cheerleader.

Whilst in New York, I was studying acting, but I again never stopped working on my music. While there, I released my very first single, “Headspace”! Recorded, mixed and mastered all by myself and put it out on all major platforms. It is the first song under the name Lyric Nidaé. While Headspace is my only released single at the moment, I have a vault of songs waiting for their time to come out. In the meantime, I continue to write music and find my own sound. Im in no rush to jump on to the next. quality is important so i create music that is authentically me, that will inspire others, and translate my message to the world.

I’m in the very early stages of my career, but my goal to carry throughout its entirety is to always be evolving. I want to always explore new ways to do what I love, continue to learn, be curious, and never keep myself small or limited.

I’m a singer, an actress, and a songwriter. I also dance, and even crochet! It’s not a matter of which path I’m going to choose, but which one I’m going to journey through first!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
it has NOT.
aside from the vocal challenges.
I battled with my physical and mental health simultaneously
i was diagnosed with a physical condition (POTS) that I have been living with for 4 years now. I am in a place where it is more manageable, but it has been extremely difficult, especially in the earlier stages. Most days, i would be unable to stand without feeling extremely unwell. I missed a lot of school, but the hardest part was having to drop out of performances or not even get the chance to audition because my body wasn’t in a place where it could hold up.
My mental health was very poor before the diagnosis and throughout, when I was able to do what I loved less.
Battling through depression and anxiety, with physical issues added on, wasn’t a good mix. And it is definitely hard in such foundational stages where I am trying to learn and build who I am.
Mentally, I am in a better state, not perfect, but it is ever-growing and improving through its own phases
along with song writing, i also began crocheting as a way to manage how i felt. i now make all kinds of things! bags, hats, stuffd animals, and clothes!

Physically, I am much better! The condition still exists, but I am back performing and worry a lot less about the physical strength of my body to get me through! After 4 years i have learned what works best for me, and now you can’t slow me down!

also just having a family supported only My my mother. She has always made it happen for us and made it LOOK easy but it has not been. emotionally it come with its challenges as well having a parent inactive but not at all far away. but my focus is always on what i do have vs what i do not. theres a lot more to be grateful for, including a mother that has always cheered twice as hard

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Singer/Songwriter and Actress!
I am most proud of my first single that i wrote, recorded, and released!!
also My crochet!! i make and sell items and am working to set up my official Etsy shop within the week!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
i would want people to know that reams and passions come to us for a reason. We wouldn’t have such strong goals for ourselves if they weren’t achievable.

God wouldn’t put a dream in your heart if he knew you couldn’t do it.

And it is so easy to compare yourself to others and how far they are ahead, or what they do. But nobody else can be you. And you can’t truly be someone else. So be the best you that you can be. We all were created for a special reason, we just have to be brave to see it through.

and be brave enough, especially in these times, to be authentic to ourselves, allow our uniqueness to shine through, and be seen. When authenticity shines through, you begin doing things that YOU love, and what you love will always win over likes from peers or strangers
