Today we’d like to introduce you to Myranda George.
Hi Myranda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At 10 years old I would make houses out of my shoe boxes, using foil for mirrors and patterned paper as runners. I also remember one Christmas I got a 3d computer game and would design spaces for hours. It was a hobby that turned into my career later on in life. After I graduated from Texas A&M in Architecture, I took an intern job at Ron Mabry Architects in Tyler, Texas. He did not put me behind a desk doing the same CAD details over and over. He let me use my creativity to do 3D designs, sit in design meetings, create the presentations for the meetings and let me watch how he sketched his ideas and built models to understand the project as a whole. It was so eye opening for me. I took a job in Dallas rolling out construction documents for large scale retail facilities. One day my project manager asked if they knew anyone who could do a 3d for one of our retail jobs. I went into his office and asked if I could do it after work. After taking on this job, I realized this was my passion and moved back to Tyler. I set up my LLC and continued to do 3D work for P.D.M.S Design Group. It was such a great opportunity that opened doors for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business at the age of 26 was not easy. It is rewarding to look back and see all the step stones that fell into place to create what I have now. As a business owner you take on so many other tasks to keep the business running- the accounting, social media, work, meetings and balance it all with family life. I started off doing solely 3D design work and I had a client who asked if I could design his spec homes. At the time this was so scary to me. I had never done that and it was out of my comfort zone. He took a risk on me and it opened a new passion of residential design in my world. I still work with this client to this day! I absolutely love residential design and this is 90% of my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in high end residential design. I work with numerous builders locally and out of state. I take on a specific number of clients so that I can give them a quality project and keep momentum on their job. My creativity is what sets me apart. When I design my houses I can see the floorplan design three dimensionally since I work in 2D and 3D simultaneously. I see the elevation as I start designing and can imagine their family in the spaces. As a wife, mother of 5, business owner and a lover of entertaining guests I know what a house needs to make it function right. I use sketches so that the process is more efficient and my clients have more “out of the box” options. You can see some of my sketch process on my social media.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Everything is a balance and work smarter not harder. I wanted a large family and also wanted a successful business. You can have both and do a great job at both. I wake up and my goal everyday is to try to keep balance in my life. Work and family. I have incorporated my children into my work. I used to take my babies to my site visits or go with me to measure jobs. They learned so much and I had the pleasure of them being with me.
