Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesus Campos.
Hi Jesus, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Chicago, but since 2008, my family and I moved several times due to changes in our situation. We lived in Arkansas, Mexico, and eventually settled in Texas when I was about 11 years old. Looking back, I realize these moves exposed me to a variety of cultures. The music, artisan crafts, and diverse ways people express themselves across borders and states made a lasting impression on me. Art and creativity have always been passions of mine. Both of my parents are Mexican, and as a first-generation American, I’ve always felt supported by my family in pursuing my creative interests. No matter the circumstances, they encouraged me to stay motivated and explore new things.
In high school, I explored different creative outlets such as art, animation, and graphic design. But photography was the one that truly resonated with me. After taking my first photography class, I became immersed in the medium. Nowadays, anyone can snap a photo with their phone, but what makes a photograph truly meaningful? Studying the history and evolution of photography fascinated me—it felt personal. For me, it’s not just about taking a good photo, but about capturing something meaningful.
Over time, I developed a deep love for film photography. Regardless of how much digital editing or filters are applied, nothing can replicate the grainy, nostalgic feel a classic film camera creates. Even older digital cameras have a unique character that can capture a moment’s essence. The photos might not always be the sharpest or most perfect, but that imperfection adds to their emotional value. I began by photographing friends, family, and pets, capturing moments that felt authentic and timeless.
Another form of creativity and passion I share is for vintage cars—a hobby passed down through the men in my family. At 19, I saved up to buy my first project car, a 1984 Toyota Cressida. My dad and I spent a year restoring it, which became a meaningful way to bond despite his demanding work schedule. That Cressida wasn’t just a cool old car; it held our story and strengthened our relationship over time.
I decided to combine my love for photography and vintage cars. At car meets, I started bringing my film camera to document the builds and projects that showed the time, effort, and artistry involved. Building these cars takes immense dedication, money, and creativity to personalize each one. For me, photographing these vehicles is like capturing life itself—each build tells its own unique story.
But my work goes beyond just shooting cool cars. It’s about capturing genuine moments and personalities on film. Each grainy photograph reflects the unique beauty and character of the individual. I prefer candid shots—no elaborate sets or exhausting poses—because I want to tell authentic stories through a medium that feels timeless. Whether it’s special events or everyday joys, I strive to preserve life’s meaningful moments.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. There have been many struggles along the way, both personally and financially. It took me several years to truly come out of my shell and begin networking and building meaningful relationships within this community.
In recent years, I also pursued a career in electrical work to support myself and fund my creative hobbies. This journey has been rewarding, and I recognize there is still much more ahead of me to learn and achieve
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Growing up, I was recognized for my natural talent in drawing and for a creative curiosity that extended into every aspect of life. Today, I channel that same passion into film photography and videography, specializing in car related events as well as capturing anniversaries, concerts, and other memorable occasions.
What truly distinguishes my work is a commitment to versatility. I refuse to confine my creativity to a single niche over the years, I’ve developed complementary skills in music production, DJing, and other artistic disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach allows me to move fluidly between creative worlds and bring a distinctive, multifaceted perspective to every project I take on
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Step outside and experience real life true inspiration often strikes when facing a mental block. If you haven’t already, place yourself in situations where problem solving becomes a necessity. Reflect on what you value most, and be willing to make sacrifices to build your skills. Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start.
