Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiil Boyd.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was young, I really got into the design shows that came on TV. I was OBSESSED. I started buying books and magazines to support my new found passion. As a young adult, I started decorating my own spaces and people slowly started asking me to do their spaces as well. That’s when I realized that this was actually something I could do professionally because Oprah said ‘if you find something you’re good at, don’t do it for free’ (or something like that, lol). I went to school for design and spent a few years working for other companies. I was recruited for a position that relocated me from Tacoma, WA to Austin, TX. They phased out that position and I moved up to Dallas. After the pandemic I decided to branch out on my own so that I could design spaces that clients love and I can be proud of according to my own values.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say it’s been smooth-ish?! When I first got started, I did manage to keep a steady flow of clients. It was post pandemic and I did soooo many offices (home and commercial). As a one woman show I have to wear a lot of hats and it gets difficult balancing them all. I’d say the biggest challenge for me comes down to my social media and marketing. It usually comes last on my list of things to do, but if you don’t keep up with it business slows down.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an Interior Designer servicing the DFW and beyond!
I mostly do residential projects but I also do commercial projects on occasion. I’m very proud of the fact that I create spaces that embody the personalities and lifestyles of the people that use them. I really believe that our environments contribute to our quality of life, so by improving the aesthetic and functionality of these spaces, I’m making the world a better place!
One thing that sets me apart from others is that I also have a psychology background and I think it helps me to better understand what people want, create spaces that cater to the specifics needs and moods of the space, and even resolve conflicts.
What makes you happy?
Little things make me happy. Hearing kids play, encountering animals I don’t see often, a clean house, celebrating wins (mine and others), unexpectedly delicious food, spending time with my family, and knowing God’s got my back.
