Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Tran.
Jenny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always dreamed of having my own studio, though I never expected it to happen so soon. At 22, I took a leap of faith and opened my first studio. Around that time, I rescued a puppy who needed round-the-clock care for two weeks, which ultimately led me to leave my salon job. During those weeks, while caring for her, I poured my energy into building my business; creating my website, reaching out to local influencers, and teaching myself how to generate traffic and visibility online.
The first few years were a huge learning curve; I worked almost every day because I couldn’t afford to take time off. But every challenge taught me something valuable about resilience and passion. Today, my studio has grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined; and Luna, that same rescue pup, is now a healthy, happy 9-year-old!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely a bumpy ride, but I would do it all again! The first few years were financially and mentally tough. One of the biggest challenges early on was learning how to build an online presence. Luckily, my cousin specialized in that area and shared a lot of helpful tips and tricks with me. I also started at the perfect time; when Instagram was rapidly growing and, even better, completely free!
As my business grew, I eventually developed a consistent flow of clients and was finally able to take some well-deserved time off. That’s when a new challenge emerged: learning to set boundaries and create a healthy work–life balance. I went from constantly being on my phone/laptop to maintaining a more structured, “normal” schedule. It took time, but finding that balance has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist at heart. Although I began my career specializing in men’s hair, my focus has evolved toward women’s hair over the years. I love both haircutting and hair coloring; to me, a great haircut and color always go hand in hand.
My specialty lies in creating natural, effortless color that complements your lifestyle. I believe it’s important to choose something sustainable; a high-maintenance color doesn’t make sense for someone with a busy schedule. I take a very realistic approach with my clients, discussing maintenance and how their hair will look as it grows out.
My ultimate goal is to help you achieve your dream hair while keeping it healthy, beautiful, and perfectly suited to your everyday life.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Do your research and find the best hairstylists or professionals in your area; then don’t be afraid to reach out and ask if you can shadow them. I did that for about a year while I was starting my studio, and it was one of the most valuable experiences I’ve ever had.
I also made a point to connect with local business owners I admired and ask them about their journeys. You can always learn something from someone, no matter what field they’re in. My biggest piece of advice is to shoot your shot! Don’t be afraid to reach out to people, invite them for coffee, and start genuine conversations. You never know what connections or inspiration might come from it.
