Today we’d like to introduce you to John Scroggins.
Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
🌿 About Hopetown Ministries
I began working in the field of mental health in my twenties, where I developed a deep passion for helping people not just survive, but truly thrive. Even early in my journey, I found that when I spoke with others, they were receptive to my guidance and often found renewed hope.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals across all stages of life—children, teens, adults, and the elderly—and discovered a great need for counselors who genuinely care and create a safe, nonjudgmental space for healing.
As I continued to grow personally and professionally, I also served as a minister, Sunday school teacher, and foster parent, roles that further shaped my heart for service and strengthened my calling to help others.
Through these experiences, my purpose became clear: to establish a place where people from all walks of life can find hope and restoration.
Hopetown Ministries was founded as a multidimensional organization dedicated to impacting the community through compassionate counseling and, eventually, transitional foster care and housing services.
Our mission is simple yet profound — to be a light of hope for those in need, regardless of background or circumstance. We aim to ensure that every person we serve leaves in a stronger, healthier, and more hopeful place than when they first arrived.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Along the way, there have been obstacles—one of the most significant being the perception of counseling within minority communities. I love working with people from all backgrounds, but I’ve seen firsthand that in some communities, there are long-held misconceptions and negative opinions about counseling. These attitudes can make it difficult for individuals to seek help, even when they deeply need it.
Through Hopetown Ministries, I want to help change those perceptions. I believe that lasting transformation begins with an open heart and a willingness to grow. My vision is to make counseling as normal and accepted as getting a haircut—especially for men. Just as the barbershop is a safe space for open, judgment-free conversations, I want therapy sessions to feel the same: a place where people can speak freely, be heard, and begin to heal.
When working with couples, I ensure that both partners feel their voices are valued and that the process is fair and productive. Building trust is essential, but preconceived notions about therapy often stand in the way. My goal is to dismantle those barriers so that everyone—regardless of background, gender, or past experiences—can experience the true power of healing through honest conversation and guided change.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I provide faith-informed mental health counseling through Hopetown Ministries, where the goal is to help individuals, couples, and families find hope, healing, and practical tools for lasting change. My work focuses on helping people gain clarity, strengthen relationships, and overcome barriers that keep them from living fulfilled lives.
I specialize in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Contextual Therapy, integrating these evidence-based approaches with a compassionate, person-centered perspective. I work with a wide range of clients—including adolescents, adults, and couples—addressing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, relationship distress, and life transitions.
I’m known for my calm and relatable approach, especially when working with clients who may be hesitant about therapy. My goal is to make counseling feel natural and accessible—something that fits into real life, not something reserved for crisis moments. As a man, I also strive to normalize therapy in male and minority communities, helping individuals see counseling as a safe, judgment-free space—much like the openness people feel in a trusted barbershop conversation.
What I’m most proud of is the impact Hopetown Ministries is making in helping people who may have never considered counseling before. Seeing clients—especially those who once felt skeptical or guarded—begin to open up, grow, and rebuild trust in themselves and others is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend clinical skill with genuine compassion and spiritual awareness. I don’t just focus on treating symptoms—I focus on helping people find meaning, restore balance, and leave every session feeling heard, respected, and stronger than before.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I plan to expand Hopetown Ministries to include multiple locations throughout Texas—and eventually beyond. My vision is to build Hopetown into a network of compassionate, skilled professionals who share the same heart for helping others find hope and lasting change.
In addition to expanding counseling services, I aim to develop transitional programs for foster youth that provide housing, mentorship, and emotional support as they move toward independence. I also plan to establish services for individuals experiencing homelessness, offering both housing and access to mental health counseling.
As Hopetown grows, we will continue to seek partnerships, donations, and community support to bring these initiatives to life. Each step forward is guided by the same mission that started it all—to be a light of hope to those who need it most and to help people rebuild their lives with dignity, stability, and purpose.
