Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Ownbey.
chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in fitness began over 30 years ago, built on a foundation of discipline and resilience I learned in the United States Marine Corps. That experience shaped everything — the mindset, the structure, and the drive to push beyond limits. After my service, I immersed myself in fitness and martial arts, training in Mixed Martial Arts and competing in bodybuilding and powerlifting. I earned titles like Mr. Metroplex Bodybuilding Champion and Texas State Powerlifting Champion, and over the years, I’ve had the privilege to train fitness competitors, MMA fighters, golfers, and now, men and women 40 and over who want to stay strong, move better, and live better.
My path wasn’t without challenges. I’ve had neck and back fusion surgeries that could have ended my career — but they became the catalyst for something greater. Those setbacks forced me to rethink everything about fitness and longevity. That’s when I developed my signature 5-20-5 Fitness System — a 30-minute, science-based workout designed to help adults 40+ train safely and effectively without pain or injury.
Today, I run a private studio in North Dallas where I help clients rebuild their strength, balance, and confidence. My mission is simple: to help men and women 40 and over stay strong to live long — physically, mentally, and emotionally. I’ve been honored to be featured on Good Morning Texas, Avid Golfer, and Texas Golfer, and to serve as a contributor for the Titleist Performance Institute.
I’m living proof that you can come back from anything when you combine discipline, passion, and faith in your purpose.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs and athletes, I’ve faced my share of challenges — physically, mentally, and personally. Early in my career, I lived and breathed fitness, but after years of training hard, I faced something I never expected — a neck fusion and a back fusion surgery that forced me to start all over again. Going from being a top athlete and trainer to barely being able to move was humbling and painful.
But that chapter changed everything for me. It taught me empathy, patience, and a deeper understanding of what people over 40 truly go through — the aches, the stiffness, the fear of getting hurt again. That’s when I shifted my focus and built the 5-20-5 Fitness System, designed to help people train smarter, not harder.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fit Over 40 Dallas / Chris Ownbey’s Golf Fitness?
My two companies are Fit Over 40 Dallas and Chris Ownbey’s Golf Fitness, and our mission is simple — to help men and women 40 and over look better, feel better, and live better. We specialize in private, 30-minute personal training sessions designed specifically for adults who want to increase strength, flexibility, and energy — safely and effectively.
We do not woork out at 40 like we did in our 20’s. And the training it’s not about vanity but longivity. Our clients want to move without pain, play golf without stiffness, have more energy, and feel confident in their bodies. That’s why I created the 5-20-5 Fitness System — a proven, science-based method built around 5 minutes of mobility, 20 minutes of focused strength and cardio training, and 5 minutes of flexibility and recovery. We do not leave the ground doing box jumps or burpees. It’s joint friendly, efficient, and designed for real results.
What sets us apart is our experience and empathy. With over 30 years in the industry — and after overcoming my own neck and back fusion surgeries — I understand how to train people 40 and older safely, effectively, and sustainably. This isn’t a big-box gym environment. It’s a private, supportive studio where every workout is customized to each client’s needs, wants, goals and limitations.
We’ve become known in the Dallas–Carrollton–Castle Hills area for transforming the way people over 40 view fitness. It’s not about vanity anymore — it’s about longevity, vitality, and quality of life.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Fit Over 40 Dallas has become a trusted name in our community. We’ve helped hundreds of men and women regain their confidence, strength, and motivation — and that’s the real reward.
At Fit Over 40 Dallas, we believe it’s never too late to take back your health. Our motto says it best:
“Be Strong to Live Long.”
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success isn’t measured by money or status — it’s measured by impact. Success is when a client who once struggled with pain now moves with confidence, plays golf pain free, or feels proud of their reflection in the mirror.
It’s about using my journey — 30 years in fitness, overcoming neck and back surgeries — to inspire others to take back their health. True success is living with purpose, serving others, and ending each day knowing you made a difference. That’s the mission behind Fit Over 40 Dallas — to help people stay strong to live long.
