Hi Tanesa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began preparing tax returns approximately fifteen years ago, initially using consumer software such as TurboTax to assist clients informally.

About a year ago, I enrolled in a free mentorship program led by my tax mentor, Kalisa. Through that experience, I formalized and legitimized my tax business. This upcoming season will be my second year operating as an Electronic Return Originator (ERO), which authorizes me to file returns electronically and holds me accountable to IRS compliance standards.

In addition to tax preparation, I provide Business formation services in Texas and offer comprehensive document preparation services to support both individuals and small business owners.

I am committed to delivering professional, accurate, and compliant services while helping clients understand and manage their financial and legal responsibilities with confidence.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all , the road has been anything but smooth, and honestly, those challenges are a big part of what shaped me. When I first started, I didn’t have professional systems, formal mentorship, or even the confidence that I was “doing it right.” I had to figure a lot out through trial and error. Transitioning from doing returns informally to legitimizing my business as an ERO meant learning compliance, investing in software, and being responsible for every detail that goes to the IRS that level of accountability was a big leap.

There were also the business-side struggles: finding clients, earning trust when I didn’t yet have a big reputation, learning how to market myself, and balancing growth with learning. Financially, in the early stages, I had to reinvest more than I earned and stay committed even when the payoff wasn’t immediate.

But the biggest challenge was pushing through self-doubt starting a compliant tax practice, expanding into document preparation and business services, and stepping into a more professional space required me to grow personally, not just technically.

Those bumps in the road forced me to become more disciplined, more knowledgeable, and more resilient. Looking back, the struggles were necessary they made me better at what I do and more confident in how I serve clients today.

Three Ribbon Taxes is a tax and document-preparation firm that serves both individuals and business owners year-round not just during tax season. A few things I wish I knew when I started:

Treat it like a business from day one. Whether it’s pricing, contracts, or boundaries set them early so you don’t have to undo bad habits later.

If you’re starting, give yourself grace. Growth comes from doing the work, learning from mistakes, and staying in motion.
