Today we’d like to introduce you to Lavani Kondadasula.
Hi Lavani, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Heritage Story is a South Asian–inspired home décor and gifting brand founded by friends-turned-co-founders Lavani and Uja. Rooted in craft and culture, the brand bridges timeless Indian artistry with a modern design language—creating pieces meant to be styled, gifted, and cherished through generations. From heirloom marble to hand-tooled brass, Heritage Story partners directly with artisan families across India, honoring slow craft while designing for today’s homes and celebrations.
How has The Heritage Story’s journey been, and what sets it apart?
It’s been a deeply fulfilling journey — equal parts creativity, connection, and discovery. From collaborating with artisans to seeing our pieces find a place in modern homes, every step has affirmed our purpose: to make heritage feel fresh and relevant. In just a few months, we’ve grown to over 5,000 followers on instagram, sold out multiple collections, and been featured on BuzzFeed and South Asian gift guides — but what means the most is how people connect with our pieces.
Tell us a little about yourselves and how The Heritage Story began.
Though our roots trace back to the same culture, our journeys have been uniquely our own — Uja was born and raised in the Middle East, while Lavani grew up in India. What we share is a deep connection to tradition, a love for craftsmanship, and the belief that heritage stays with you, no matter where you are. Together, we built The Heritage Story to celebrate the artisans, stories, and small details that give meaning to our spaces and the gifts we give. It’s our way of honoring where we come from and creating something timeless for where we’re going.
Gifting is such a beautiful extension of your brand. Can you share the different kinds of gifting you curate
We design gifts that carry meaning and celebration into every moment. From realtor and closing gifts for South Asian homes—like our Heritage Blessing Box to corporate festive gifting for Diwali or Christmas, we create experiences that resonate. We also offer hostess gifts, art-inspired treasures, wedding favors, and housewarming presents, all curated to feel contemporary, personal, and rooted in Indian tradition.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What challenges have you faced building a cross-continent brand?
Working with artisans means honoring time — and sometimes that means longer timelines, slower processes, and unpredictable delays. Add to that tariffs, shipping, and being a two-woman team managing opposite time zones. On the home front, we balance motherhood, other careers, and life. As a small business, we do everything in-house — design, product development, photography, social media, packaging, and shipping. It’s intense, but deeply rewarding.
We’ve been impressed with The Heritage Story, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
How do your pieces fit into non-South Asian or minimalist homes?
Our pieces are rooted in Indian craftsmanship but designed with a global eye — effortless to layer into any home. A marble platter becomes a cheese board, a brass urli transforms into a floral centerpiece, and a tea light brings a warm, universal glow. As we grow, we’re expanding into wellness with copper and kansa, blending heritage and modern living in a way that feels elevated, intentional, and timeless.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
What advice would you give to someone starting a small business ?
Believe in your vision and trust the uniqueness of your product line. Even if the market feels saturated, there’s always room for offerings that stand out. Be active and consistent on social media—proactively create opportunities and showcase your work. Don’t hesitate to pitch yourself; visibility matters. And remember, growth takes time. The beginning may be slow, but persistence, patience, and confidence in what you offer will help you build momentum.
