Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael and Kendra Sanders.
Kendra had a deep passion to be a pastry chef. When her fiancé and now husband Michael lost his mom to breast cancer in 2010, they had no idea how they would begin to put back the pieces. When Michael mentioned to her that he missed his mom banana pudding, Kendra seized the moment to enact her passion to heal the moment. She had never made banana pudding before but tasted it several times and was not satisfied with the inconsistencies that were available on the market. Either it was too sweet, too runny, too bland or just simply not good enough.
She went into the kitchen that evening and wondered to herself how would she like for pudding to taste. As if the heavens guided her mind and hands she came out of the kitchen several hours later with a piece of heaven on a spoon. When Michael tasted it, he could not believe how great it was. As soon as he tasted the pudding it immediately brought the overwhelming feeling of home and family.
Kendra added the pudding to her online bakery MyGi’s Bakery Cafe and it was a hit. When life happened again in 2013, Kendra and Michael had to confront yet another serious situation involving their daughter who was born a micro premature baby at 11 ounces with a 12% chance of survival. Kendra shut down her online bakery to move into the hospital with their daughter and Michael took care of the home while working as a senior leader with a national auto manufacturer. Kendra and Michael felt desperate, perplexed and helpless.
When Kendra thought about closing her bakery for good, they decided on the idea of just doing the pudding because how much people loved it. Kendra and Michael both wanted to do something to help their daughter long-term needs, and both agreed that this could be an opportunity to create a legacy for their family. After Kenai was released from the hospital and her recovery was well on track, Kendra and Michael jumped off the cliff of entrepreneurship together and Pudding On Smiles was born. Pudding On Smiles was created from love and with love. After one spoon full of this gourmet treat, you will never look at pudding the same way.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, but nothing worth having/building is supposed to be easy. We started this company while we were homeless and with $300-$400 in our pockets. Started at Dallas Farmers Market and just reinvested along the way.
