Today we’d like to introduce you to Rickey Watkins.
Hi Rickey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in South Dallas, Texas, in a two-parent household, and music has been a part of my life since around age 13. Back then, the Dallas scene was buzzing — groups like DSR and labels like Shiest House Records were making waves, and you also had that strong influence from H-Town with SUC and Swishahouse. That era really shaped my early passion for music.
In 2012, I started my company, GreenGrass Entertainment, which at first was completely music-based. I was focused on being a rapper and working in music production. But things started to shift when I attended MediaTech Institute. I took a post-production class that opened up a whole new world for me — especially foley and ADR work. That’s what led me to start working with Funimation, now Crunchyroll, where I’ve mixed numerous anime projects.
Today, GreenGrass Entertainment has evolved into a full entertainment company — we’re still rooted in music, from songwriting to production, but we’ve expanded into post-production, ADR, and even Twitch streaming. It’s been a journey from a dream to a reality, and I’m just getting started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all—it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The hardest part was finding people with the same work ethic and loyalty so we could really push forward together. I think now I finally have a couple of solid team members who are truly ready to build and move in the same direction.
In the beginning, I struggled with second-guessing my own work. But over time, with the help of great mentors and teachers, I gained confidence and sharpened my craft. At this point, I’d say my skill set is on par with someone who’s been doing post-production mixing for over ten years.
Life also changed a lot since the last time we talked—back then I was single, and now I’m married with two kids and a home. Balancing family life with creative growth wasn’t easy, but we made it work. I found my way back to music while continuing my journey in post-production, and that balance has made me a better artist overall.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in post-production mixing—both stereo and 5.1 surround sound—mainly for animation. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on some incredible projects, from Dragon Ball to My Hero Academia to One Piece. That experience really shaped my sound and helped me develop an ear for precision and emotion in storytelling through audio.
Outside of post-production, I’m also a recording artist. I’ve had one of my songs played on the radio, released two official projects, and dropped multiple mixtapes along the way. Right now, I’m working on my next project, Be Right Back, which is set to release in early 2026.
I’m also stepping into new territory as a songwriter and creative director for my AI artist, Rosé. Her debut album, Pedals, drops on Halloween—and I wrote the entire project myself as a way to showcase my songwriting versatility.
What I’m most proud of is the balance I’ve found between all these creative lanes. Whether it’s sound mixing, songwriting, or performing, I’ve built everything from the ground up. I feel like I’m standing on top of a hill right now—proving to myself that I can do all of this and still keep evolving.
How do you think about happiness?
That’s an easy one—family and success. Being a husband and a father has shown me the true meaning of happiness. I have two beautiful daughters who I love more than anything, and every day I’m teaching them new things while they’re teaching me just as much in return.
Family and success go hand in hand for me. My girls get to see their father chasing his dreams, working hard, and never giving up. That means everything, because I want them to know that with dedication, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. There’s no better feeling than making them proud—and being proud of myself at the same time.
