Conversations with Robin Hackett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Hackett.

Hi Robin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Robin Hackett began playing and singing at the age of 11 years old while her father was stationed at Wiesbaden Air Force Base in Germany. Her family lived in a small village along the Rhine River with only one other American family in town. She had a lot of time on her hands, so taught herself to play the guitar with a book called, Learn to Play the Guitar in Ten Days. Her biggest inspiration at the time was Woodstock legend Richie Havens whom she would later open up for.

Sundays were spent listening to music. Her father was an avid music fan. On any given Sunday one could hear Miles Davis, The Carpenters, Steely Dan, Sarah Vaughn, The Vienna Boys Choir, Beethoven, Roberta Flack, Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc. Robin soaked it all in.

She moved to New York City after graduation from Hamilton College in Upstate, New York. Whild in New York she began soaking up the sounds of city life and honing her craft. She recorded her freshman release, One Foot Barefoot with producer Jon Gordon (Madonna, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega). In New York City a friend introduced her to singing jazz. She fell in love with jazz singing and decided to come up with her own songs that blended her folk roots with her new found love of jazz.

Eventually she tired of the fast-paced hectic city, she moved to Dallas, Texas where she spent 15 years expanding her love of music by falling in love with Country and Americana. Don’t try and box her into a genre. Her music is as eclectic has her life has been.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it has not been a smooth ride. With the presence of digital music and AI, the music business has changed immensely. I continue on because it is what I love. I love making music. Writing, recording and performing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I spend my days writing, creating, collaborating, booking gigs and marketing. I am also an actress, so I go on auditions. The later part of my day I teach voice, piano and guitar at a professional performing arts school. I also perform with an organization that performs for Senior Centers.

I think the thing that separates me from others is that I continue on no matter how old I’ve become. Many of my friends that started out with in the music business, quit.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Rick Rubin’s book on creativity. Also anything that has to do with meditating and maintaining a balanced inner life. Meditation and spirituality feed my creativity.
