Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Paulsen.
Hi Tara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved traveling and planning trips — not just visiting new places, but really immersing myself in them. I’m drawn to those rare, off-the-beaten-path experiences and love learning about a destination through its food, culture, and people. My background in world and art history deepened that curiosity and appreciation for the stories that shape each place.
Over time, my love for travel naturally merged with my passion for yoga and wellness. I began to see how meaningful it could be to bring those worlds together — to create experiences that nourish both body and mind while exploring beautiful destinations.
The idea for my company actually started with a trip I planned for my mom’s 75th birthday to Israel and Jordan. I wanted to take her to see Petra, and that journey sparked something bigger — the vision to create curated, small-group travel experiences that blend wellness, culture, history, food, and authentic connection.
Sustainability is also a big part of what I do. I focus on working with local families and small businesses so that every trip not only offers something memorable for travelers but also gives back to the communities that make these experiences possible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. It’s been really hard — full of challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. There have been just as many hard days as breakthroughs. But at the same time, it’s been incredibly rewarding. Seeing people truly relax, try something new, or connect deeply with a place or another person on one of our trips — that’s what keeps me going. Those moments remind me why I do this.
Running a business like this has taught me that you really have to trust yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable. You have to be willing to face failure, rejection, and self-doubt — because they’re all part of the process. And just as important, you have to lean on your support system. I’ve learned to listen to the people who believe in me, to take advice, to ask for help, and to learn from those around me.
There are days when I question everything, but then someone books a trip or tells me they can’t wait for the next retreat, and it gives me that spark of hope again. It reminds me that even though the road is bumpy, it’s leading somewhere meaningful.
We’ve been impressed with Wonder to Wander Travel, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is all about creating curated, small-group travel experiences that blend wellness, culture, history, food, and authentic connections. It’s not just about seeing a destination — it’s about really experiencing it in a way that’s meaningful, mindful, and memorable.
What makes it special is the focus on intentional travel. We design trips that allow people to slow down, connect with themselves and others, and engage deeply with the places they visit. Sustainability and supporting local communities are also central — we work with local families and small businesses so that every experience gives back and feels authentic.
At the heart of it, it’s about creating moments that people will carry with them long after the trip is over — whether it’s trying something new, discovering a hidden corner of the world, or forming a genuine connection with someone or someplace that leaves a lasting impression.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, at Wonder to Wander Travel, I hope to take our travelers to even more incredible destinations and continue growing our family of “wanderers.” I want to create more opportunities for people to connect deeply with each other, with local communities, and with the places they visit.
Part of that vision is giving back — partnering with local families and small businesses so that every trip supports the communities that make these experiences possible. I also hope to expand our offerings, creating trips with more unique experiences, wellness activities, cultural immersion, and hands-on learning. Ultimately, it’s about curating journeys that leave a lasting impact on both our travelers and the places we visit, fostering connection, growth, and discovery along the way.
