Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Do.
Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started back in 2012, completely by chance. A friend of mine was trying to sell his camera but couldn’t find a buyer. He noticed I was always showing up to every high-school events, and told me, “You should pick up photography.” So I did. I bought his camera and started teaching myself everything from scratch.
A month later, I found myself photographing a friend’s wedding. I wasn’t the hired photographer just the only person there with a professional camera. That one small decision kicked off a cycle of constant learning. Every week brought new lessons, new challenges, and a growing obsession with capturing stories.
After six years behind the lens, I hit a turning point. I decided to move from photography into videography, and that’s when everything accelerated. In 2017, I was juggling four to five different jobs: full-stack web developer, social-media manager, photographer, videographer, and street-team member for the Dallas Observer. Eventually, I told myself it was time to focus and master one path.
That decision led me into the esports scene. I started showing up at local events in Dallas, including gaming meetups hosted by the Dallas Mavericks at Microsoft Stores, where I’d shoot vertical videos before short-form content was even a trend. I’d film, edit on my MacBook, and deliver a recap video before the event even wrapped up. Seeing their content ready in real time got organizers’ attention.
A few months later, an agency rep I’d met at those events remembered how I worked. When I applied for a videographer role with Complexity Gaming, freshly acquired by the Dallas Cowboys, that same person, now their content manager pushed my resume straight to the top. I landed the job with only three months of video experience.
The pressure was on. I dove head-first into projects, learning new techniques and camera systems as fast as I could. Within a year, I was nominated for Esports Videographer of the Year (2019) by the Esports Awards and promoted to Senior Videographer to Senior Video Producer. I went on to produce major projects, including directing and filming the documentary series Through The Smoke, which followed one of the youngest rising teams in CS:GO history.
After years in the esports world, I knew it was time to build something of my own. That’s when I launched Dallas Media Company LLC, a full-service video and photo production agency continuing the same passion that started with one borrowed camera and an urge to tell better stories.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all… but I wouldn’t trade the rough parts for anything. Every step came with its own set of challenges. Early on, I didn’t have mentors, formal training, or the best gear. Everything I learned came from trial, error, and a lot of late nights watching tutorials or figuring out how to make something work with what I had. I had to make mistakes in public, fail shoots, and face the kind of self-doubt that hits when you’re trying to break into a creative field that doesn’t hand out instructions.
When I switched from photography to videography, it felt like starting over again. Suddenly I had to understand storytelling, pacing, audio design, lighting for motion, it was like learning a new language. On top of that, I was working multiple jobs just to keep the lights on while trying to find my voice as a creative.
