Life & Work with Tiffany Layzell of Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Layzell.

Hi Tiffany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Despite a long family history here in Dallas, I actually had my start in southern England. But when I was just a couple years old, my mother brought me back with her to Texas, and I’ve come to call DFW my home ever since. Growing up here has definitely had it’s ups and downs, but I’m lucky to have been raised by my mother, a business owner, and my grandfather, who owned a succesful tailoring business here in his younger years. With their help I’ve excelled in school, chased passions, and have started a career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve gone through a few hurdles, some include struggles with moving a lot in my teens, which then affected my school life. But one of the major struggles was losing my grandfather, Felipe Diaz, when I was 12. It’s been about a decade since his passing, and while I still grieve and miss him, I do my best to honour his memory and the beautiful culture he and his family raised me in.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Starting from when I was real young, I’ve always had a passion for writing, specifically creative writing. Throughout my childhood, I excelled in writing classes and state exams, and I have even been accepted into young talent programs at multiple universities. So when I got the opprotunity a little over a year ago to become a teacher focusing on creative writing, I jumped at it immediately. I quickly caught on with the job and I’m praised constantly by parents and fellow teachers. As I’m young myself, I’m able to engage well with my younger students, and it’s really fun surprising them with my knowledge of the internet and pop culture. I always get a big smile on my face watching my students progress from simple sentences to full, multi-paragraph essays/stories and seeing them learn to enjoy writing and expressing themselves.

What are your plans for the future?
Currently, I have just started college pursuing my actual dream career, which is nuclear physics! I realize it may seem like a big jump from teaching, but I enjoy both, and I would love to incorporate teaching into my future career. As I multitask between studying and teaching, I hope to transfer abroad to somewhere in Europe, so that I can also travel while being close to my friends, who are like family to me.
