Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Laura Britton of Outskirts

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Laura Britton. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Laura, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My days start and end with unconditional furry Love. I wake up and feed my 19 cats and making sure that my 16 year old elderly cat eats enough of his special food. I feed my 3 dogs. While everyone eats I get ready for work as an industrial mechanic. I make sure I get a furry hug or boops from everyone before I leave. I Love my day job, but can’t wait to get home to be surrounded by all my fur babies who are the inspiration for the Children’s Books that I write. When I arrive home my clothes go straight in the washer and I jump in the shower and wash the day off. I get so many snuggles and Love as soon as I step out. I finish my day off by making dinner for everyone and myself then head to bed and every joins me. There’s nothing better than falling asleep surrounded and snuggled up with my fur babies.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Inspired by my fur babies and the world’s need for kindness, compassion and understanding I write an ongoing Children’s Book series of Popper’s Tails. It all started as a coping mechanism after Popper’s traumatic injury and forming bonds with people via social media. So far we have published Oh No Teddy that teaches about how it’s what’s on the inside that matters, Thunder the Mouse that teaches that no matter how small you are you can do big things and our soon to be released The Right Kind of Pretty that teaches that pretty is not skin deep it’s how you treat others.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The moment that I saw Popper show forgiveness to those that hurt him and continue on happily without holding onto any negativity towards them. That is the moment that I realized that the anger I carried was a heavy weight that only affected me and those I Love. That was the day I decided to do my best to let go of negativity and not hold grudges.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me strength and compassion. It taught me that I am stronger than I thought I could ever be not just physically but emotionally and mentally. It also taught me compassion and empathy for others and how to use my past sufferings to help others make it through their own.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that art should be free. Free to anyone free to everyone art should be free. Now as a writer I’m struggling to get my book sales up and I realized that art shouldn’t be free because when art is free the artist starves thus being the starving artist.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people tell the story about how I went from being very angry and misguided just a walking ball of negativity to somebody that is compassionate and helped others. Someone who stopped holding grudges and found the positive in every situation while being able to push away the negativity. I hope people tell this story so others can understand that everybody can change for the better.
