Kelley Irwin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Kelley, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have always felt great joy in being a mom. We have two boys – one in elementary school and one in middle school. Watching them discover things they love and pursue learning about those things is such a joy for me. In our house right now, those things are sports, music, reading, and building things with their hands. I get little glimpses of the men they’re growing into, and it’s so rewarding.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My husband, Jeremy, and I own and operate Irwin Construction. We’re a design & construction firm based in Argyle, TX specializing in residential renovations. Our passion is to help our clients design a space that truly feels like home and suits their family’s needs, and we take pride in executing that design with honesty, integrity, and excellent craftsmanship. In short, we help people transform their house into a home.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My parents instilled work ethic in me as a child, and we were taught the value of doing hard things. My view of work has evolved during the course of my marriage as well. My husband is the hardest worker I know. He does not stop when things are hard, doesn’t shy away from difficult situations, and finds joy in working to serve other people. Because we’re both naturally bent towards work, we’ve had to intentionally learn how to rest and draw boundaries around times to rest as a family. Now we’re teaching our two boys the value of work AND the proper place of rest, and they’re keeping us accountable to balance these well in our own lives.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It’s not all up to you, and your worth isn’t wrapped up in what you can accomplish. Be faithful with the tasks given to you, give yourself grace, and find the value in taking a breath.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”
– Psalm 127:1-2
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My Christian faith is the foundation of my life, and all my values and priorities are built upon it. Our marriage, our family, and our company are built on these same values of truth, integrity, and honesty.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope I will be remembered for loving well. We have been blessed with an incredible local community of family and friends. The bonds we have are uncommon in today’s American culture. I strive to love on those relationships as well as they love my family and extend that care into the greater community around us.
