Robbyn Evette shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Robbyn , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think others struggle with depression but are ashamed and not comfortable to talk about it! There are some households that sweep the talk about depression under the family living room rug. Being shameful that it would make the family look bad. Some people also get made fun of or the talk of the family, even the community. You get called sick in the head or crazy also. It makes a person that struggles with depression shut down refusing to open up even to receiving counseling.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Robbyn Evette an Visual Artist a native of Oak Cliff. My mother discovered my art talent at age four. Her words to me were “Practice Makes Perfect”! Those words stuck with me since then. I entered art contests from elementary through high school winning first place. The first entry was at Booker T Washington High School, the second entry was at Stephanie’s Art Gallery. I also had my artwork showcased at a few other art galleries as well. And I was one of a few talented artists chosen to paint an art mural on The Deep Ellum Tunnel Mural Project in 1999. August 14, 2018, I decided to open up a small business in Artistry. Recently I was chosen to create other upcoming future art murals from South of Dallas to Grand Prairie which I’m currently working on. I just want to share my gift with others especially in these strange and hard times we’re now living in. Art is freedom of expression. Art is like therapy but with shapes, images and bright colors. I enjoy creating artistry that also tells you a story or express the imagination of those. I hope to one day have my own public art gallery that caters to everyone especially those with disabilities. My first art gallery I turned one of my empty bedroom (3 bedroom home) in an virtual art gallery during the pandemic in 2020. My virtual art gallery helped others and myself cope with the 2020 pandemic. As long as I am able I will never stop creating Art.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I witnessed at an art showcase I was featured in how my art touched a lot of people. I’m talking about the crowd kept circling back just to look at my art. Don’t get me wrong there were other great artists there as well.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, it was during a life changing situation in 2013 that changed me forever. I was in my most darkest moments and remembered that I have a gift (art)! I begin to create again and every since then I haven’t stopped since. From that moment I made a promise to myself to never stop creating art.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I’ve always been very transparent with who I am.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel at peace when I’m creating Artistry or gardening. It’s my therapy and how I escape what’s around me.
