Hi Crystal, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’ve always made time to go to the gym, but for a while, I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. I decided to talk to one of the trainers about my goals and what I could do differently. From there, I committed to a new routine, cleaning up my eating habits and working out four days a week. Within just eight weeks, I started hitting goals like never before. It’s been such a rewarding journey and definitely something I’m really proud of.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Crystal Knight, and I’m the proud owner of Salon Inks Hair and Makeup Studio, located in Richardson, Texas. At Salon Inks, we specialize in creating beauty experiences for women of all nationalities, with a focus on hair care, makeup artistry, and bridal services.
What makes Salon Inks unique is our ability to blend artistry with culture. I’ve built the brand around the idea of representation, creating a space where African American women and people of color feel seen, celebrated, and catered to, while still welcoming clients from all walks of life. Our salon isn’t just a place to get your hair and makeup done; it’s a community where beauty, confidence, and self-care come together.
Right now, I’m excited about growing our team and transitioning the salon into a commission-based structure that allows stylists to thrive while helping elevate the business to the next level. My long-term goal is to grow Salon Inks into a household name and ultimately a million-dollar brand that stands as a pillar of excellence and inclusivity in the industry.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship I have with my children has most shaped how I see myself. Seeing the world through their eyes, especially how technology influences their generation, has inspired me to be more adaptable, curious, and forward-thinking. They push me to lead by example, to stay grounded yet innovative, and to help them grow into confident, unstoppable leaders.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Never stop asking questions. Be curious and brave. Have the courage to speak up and engage openly about the things that inspire and intrigue you. Your voice and curiosity will take you further than you can imagine.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
My integrity is non-negotiable. I will never compromise my values or participate in anything within my industry that I don’t genuinely believe in. In beauty and business, authenticity and trust mean everything to me. I believe in doing what’s right even when no one is watching, treating people with respect, and maintaining honesty in every interaction. Protecting my integrity allows me to build real connections, create meaningful work, and inspire others to do the same.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. I believe true purpose and excellence come from within, not from recognition. I’ve learned to give my best because it reflects my character, discipline, and commitment to growth. Even without praise, I know the effort I put in will always lead to personal fulfillment, growth, and impact, and that’s what truly matters to me.
