Zach Mathews shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Zach, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’d say I’m more of a wanderer. I never really know exactly where I’m headed, and I’m okay with that. I spent nearly 10 years working in a print shop, thinking that would be my lifelong career and now I’ve been tattooing for over a decade. Life has a way of surprising you, and I’ve learned to follow where it leads.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a father and husband before anything else. When it comes to my work, I just want to create solid tattoos, build good relationships, and keep the bills paid. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching sports, and doing just about anything related to barbecue.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents definitely saw who I was before I did. They’ve always been supportive, even when offering tough but honest criticism. I couldn’t have asked for better people to guide me and coach me through life. Honestly, they probably still know me better than I know myself.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure has held me back many times. It’s caused me to avoid certain opportunities, but it’s also pushed me forward when I’ve had no other choice. In those moments, fear becomes a motivating tool that helps me rise to challenges I once thought were impossible.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest misconception in the tattoo industry is the idea that artists dictate the market. In reality, clients hold the power, driving demand through their preferences and purchasing decisions. Our art, no matter how well-executed, is only financially viable if it is priced correctly and aligns with what the consumer market actively wants.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I have always operated from a place of purpose, not compliance. While the current tattoo market demands an exhausting social media “song and dance” for relevance, I refuse to buy into that performance culture. I choose to let my work speak for itself. If prioritizing artistic integrity over online theatrics limits my career, it is a consequence I accept.
