Nyakouth (Sunday) Tong of Dallas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Nyakouth (Sunday) Tong and have shared our conversation below.

Nyakouth (Sunday), really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I have come to the realization that I must stand firmly in my purpose and prioritize my own well-being. For a long time, I was hesitant to put myself first, fearing that others might perceive me in a negative light. This fear led me to consistently prioritize the needs of those around me, ultimately resulting in severe burnout. I found myself emotionally, mentally, and physically drained from giving so much to others while neglecting my own needs.

After reaching a breaking point, I finally told myself, “enough is enough.” I began to establish clear boundaries with the people in my life, even those I cared about the most. This process was incredibly challenging and painful at times, as it required me to let go of relationships that had been a significant part of my life. However, I understood that sacrificing some of these connections was necessary for my personal growth and healing.

Now, I have shifted my focus to prioritizing my happiness, spiritual growth through prayer, and advancing my career. This intentional change has brought me a profound sense of fulfillment and joy. I feel like I have finally discovered my true purpose and happiness, which has transformed my life in ways I never imagined possible.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello everyone, my name is Nyakuoth, but most people know me as Sunday. I’m a beauty, fashion, and lifestyle creator who’s passionate about inspiring confidence, faith, and self-love through everything I do.

My story begins with my roots – I was born in South Sudan, and my family came to the U.S. as refugees, seeking new opportunities and a better future. Growing up, life wasn’t always easy for my parents. However, they taught my siblings and me the importance of strength, gratitude, and the power of staying true to who you are. My love for beauty began as a way to express myself and create joy even in tough moments. What started as something small slowly became my purpose.

Outside of content creation, I work in hospitality as a supervisor, and I’m currently majoring in Business Management with hopes of becoming an Area Director in the future. Balancing my education, career, and creative journey has been such a blessing — it’s taught me how to lead me with grace, patience, and purpose in every space I step into.

Today, I create content that celebrates women — helping them see their own light and reminding them that beauty isn’t just what you wear, it’s what shines from within. My brand blends elegance, faith, and realness because I believe in being authentic while walking boldly in your calling.

To my South Sudanese people — I carry You guys with me in everything I do. Our culture, our strength, and our stories deserve to be seen and heard. I hope my journey reminds every young black girl back home or abroad that your dreams are valid, and you can become anything you are called to be.

Right now, I’m focused on growing my platform, connecting with more people, and building with brands that align with my purpose. I just want to keep spreading love, light, and inspiration — One post, one story, and one face at a time.

Translation: All things are within reach when God walks with you.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who has taught me the most about work is my mom. She is the hardest-working woman I know, juggling overtime, overnight shifts, and back-to-back days, all for the sake of my siblings and me. She demonstrates what real strength, resilience, and determination look like. Even when she’s exhausted, she never gives up, and that’s where we inherit our work ethic. Watching her push through challenges while caring for our family has taught my siblings and me lessons that no one else could. She is our hero, and I aspire to be even half the woman she is.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain in July of 2025. That was the moment I chose to be true to myself and stop holding onto things that no longer served me. I walked away from relationships that disturbed my peace and focused on healing and growth. Through that process, I got closer to God – my relationship with Him became stronger than ever. I stopped trying to carry everything on my own and started trusting His plan for me. What once felt like pain became purpose, and I’ve been walking in that strength ever since.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I hold family unity and faith as my highest priorities. As a proud South Sudanese woman, the love and support of my family, combined with my deep faith in God, serve as the bedrock of my existence. They not only guide my actions but also reinforce my identity and connection to my heritage. Regardless of the challenges or opportunities that life may present, I am committed to upholding the values instilled in me by my family. I honor our rich traditions and strive to walk in unwavering faith, as these principles are non-negotiable in my life. They remind me of my roots and illuminate my path forward, ensuring that I remain true to myself and my community.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely, I firmly believe in dedicating myself fully to every task and endeavor, even when I know no one is observing my efforts. Whether it’s in my personal projects, professional responsibilities, or even simple daily tasks, I strive to put forth my best effort. This commitment not only reflects my values but also fosters a deep sense of integrity and personal fulfillment. I find that giving my all, regardless of external recognition, leads to growth and a stronger sense of self-discipline. It’s about setting high standards for myself and striving to meet them, ensuring that I consistently improve and evolve, both personally and professionally.
