Darrin, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Touring out west, specifically. It’s become more therapeutic than anything else in the 20+ years.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a guitarist, primarily, I play a range of styles including percussive tapping, rock, metal, blues, middle-eastern, Indian, old time, bluegrass, classical, jazz, Spanish . . . woven into my own compositions. This is what I tour on, as well.
Locally, I’m part of some great projects. The two main ones I’m focused on and excited about right now are
the Wright Tones and Hijazz Ensemble.
Wright Tones is a duo with the amazing vocalist/multi-instrumentalist, Morgan Wright.

Hijazz Ensemble is a fusion of Middle-Eastern and Jazz where I play oud and cümbüş. Mark Hyde on baglama, Eddie Dunlap on drums and Dave Williams on sax.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was just another number trying to fit into this bullshit society, working the “real job”.
Music has freed me in a sense.
The most valuable relationships in my life are through making music.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Lots of times. I’m always glad I didn’t.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
The fact that commercial music sucks. All the cookie cutter bullshit is just bad and soulless.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Obviously I was born into this. I never do what I’m told.
