Meet Sarah Burwell of Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Burwell.

Sarah Burwell

Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

During my senior year of art school, everything changed my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. In that moment, art stopped being just about expression; it became about healing. Watching her go through that journey shifted my entire perspective on what it means to create something meaningful.

After she passed, I moved to Denver, Colorado, where I opened Arch and started exploring restorative and cosmetic tattooing. It was my way of merging art with purpose and helping people feel whole again in their own skin. I eventually closed Arch for two years to regroup and find myself again, and in 2024, I moved to Dallas and reopened it with a clearer heart and mission. Now, every client I work with feels like a piece of that healing journey coming full circle.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Losing my mom while trying to finish art school broke me open in ways I didn’t expect. Grief changed how I saw everything, including myself. Starting a business while still figuring out who I was as an artist and a person was tough. There were moments I wanted to walk away completely at times when the pressure, self-doubt, and financial strain felt overwhelming. Closing Arch for two years was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but it was also necessary. I needed to pause, to heal, to reconnect with why I started in the first place. When I reopened in Dallas, it felt like a rebirth. The struggles shaped me and they taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of creating from a place of love and purpose. LA is where my vision came alive, but Dallas reinforced my purpose.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work focuses on restorative and cosmetic tattooing, specifically medical tattooing, scar camouflage, and natural-looking permanent brows. I come from a fine art background, so my approach is rooted in detail, balance, and realism. I’ve always had an eye for natural beauty and subtle enhancements that bring confidence without changing who someone is. What I’m most proud of is how personal my work has become. It’s not just about creating beautiful results; it’s about helping people feel whole again, especially those who’ve gone through loss, illness, or trauma. Every client’s story reminds me why I started.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Hopefully no robots botching people, lol.I think the industry is evolving in such an exciting way. Over the next 5–10 years, I see a huge shift toward more natural, hyper-realistic work and a deeper focus on trauma-informed care. It’s not just about beauty anymore it’s about restoration, confidence, and emotional healing. Medical and restorative tattooing are becoming more widely recognized as legitimate forms of therapy and artistry. I think we’ll see more collaboration between artists and medical professionals, more education and regulation, and hopefully more awareness around how powerful this work can be.
At the same time, I hope the human touch never gets lost. This work requires empathy, intuition, and connection
