Today we’d like to introduce you to David Andrews.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out boxing when I was younger in London where I’m from, also tried other martial arts, was not until I was older and wanted to get back in shape that I took it seriously, had a few fights and went from there.
Boxing helped me mentally and physically, but it also gave me a skill to work in the fitness industry for over 15 years.
I coached amateurs and worked with youth organisations in London, whilst training clients and teaching classes in the best gyms and private members clubs in London.
In Dallas, I continued this and also spearheaded new boxing programs in studios and hosted many workshops here.
I am now only part time teaching classes/clients, as much of my time is spent coaching fighters at Strikers Gym (Strikers ABC) on Lower Greenville.
I have a very small team of amateur boxers and occasionally work with and train pro fighters too.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not!
The main thing that changed for me over last few years was Covid and the lockdown rules.
Because of that I had to change industries as a lot of gyms shut down.
Also the fitness industry is fickle and most gyms do not pay benefits.
Being 50 now also changes a lot!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Boxing!
Helping young people
I like to think my style of boxing and coaching is a bit unique and also different from a lot of others here as I come from the UK, that sets me apart really, I have a good eye for it at least!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
In terms of Boxing, the biggest shout outs would have to go to Scott Douglas, who is a mate from London/Essex and a former fighter, he encouraged me to coach and after a break again, to get out there, coaching fighters again in the last year or two.
The other person is also named Scott!
Scott Poulton, who is also a former boxer and coach for many years from London, who has always supported me in boxing and got me in the front door of a place or two in the fitness industry.
The main person is of course my wife, without her I wouldn’t be in DTX!
