Artist Statement
Scott Shubin

As a sculptor with 20 years of experience, I strive to create artworks that captivate and engage viewers through the interplay of form, light, and movement. My chosen mediums, including LED lights, stainless steel, aluminum, and kinetic elements, allow me to push the boundaries of traditional sculpture and explore new dimensions of artistic expression.

Through the fusion of contemporary aesthetics with rustic undertones, my work embodies a dynamic blend of modernity and timelessness. Each piece I create tells a unique story, drawing inspiration from the world around us and the interplay of light and shadow. LED lighting plays a vital role in enhancing the visual impact, infusing my sculptures with an ethereal glow and accentuating their intricate details.

The use of stainless steel and aluminum enables me to craft bold and sturdy structures, while also incorporating delicate and intricate elements. The juxtaposition of strength and fragility creates a harmonious balance, inviting viewers to contemplate the essence of duality in our existence.

Kinetic elements breathe life into my sculptures, allowing them to evolve and interact with their environment. The subtle or dramatic movements add an element of surprise, inviting viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeper level and explore the evolving relationship between art and observer.

Ultimately, my goal as a sculptor is to evoke emotions, spark curiosity, and provoke contemplation. I aspire to create immersive experiences that transcend the boundaries of traditional art forms, leaving a lasting impression on those who encounter my work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with any business, there are struggles along the way. But with resilience and perseverance I overcame the struggles with promoting my sculptures to developers, cities and residential clients. In 2015 I received the DFW Arts Awards for Sculptor of the year. I continue to push the boundaries of sculpture with innovative materials. Every sculpture I design and fabricate is different from the last.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been designing and fabricating sculptures for over 20 years now. I’m known for creating sculptures that are unique with the use of different materials. Each sculpture is different from the last. Many of my sculptures are kinetic meaning they move like a weather vane in the wind or activated by the viewer. Also, I like to embed LED lights in my sculptures with UV acrylic to add color. I’m most proud of each sculpture I create. But I’m especially proud of 3 sculptures. One is a large scale Steam Punk Duck located in Duck Creek Park in Garland, This sculpture is 18’long by 20′ wing span. It has an embedded solar panel with over 800 led lights. It’s the largest continuous solar powered sculpture in the state of Texas. Second would be “Circular Reflect’ in Georgetown, TX. This large scale kinetic sculpture is unique as it has recycled street signs affixed to the sculpture. And finally, my kinetic humming-bird with an attached bench in HomeTown in North Richland Hills, TX.
What makes me unique is that each sculpture is very different from the last. So my sculptural style changes with each sculpture.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I was fortunate to work as an assistant for 9 years for a well know sculptor in the Dallas area. I learned so much regarding sculpture and public art. I enjoy teaching others the craft of metal sculpting. I taught for 2 semesters at Booker T Washington High School for Performing Arts as an adjunct sculptor consultant. I very much enjoyed teaching art students how to fabricate three dimensional sculptures. Several students have graduated and have gone to universities to extend their studies in sculpture.
