Conversations with Crystal Omorogieva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Omorogieva.

Hi Crystal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always had a passion for beauty. I went to cosmetology school while in high school and would do students’ hair while in college. I even did my own makeup for prom. I went to Victoria Secret (who sold makeup at the time) and asked one of the ladies to show me how to do my own makeup. It never occurred to me that I could just pay someone to do the makeup for me.

After college graduation, and as time progressed, I got further away from the industry. I would have clients every now and again but working in my degreed field became most important. The years went by and I found myself unemployed and at a crossroad.

During this time, I would be attending several events that needed me to look my best. I went to Ulta and learned how to do one makeup look. I used the same look and just changed the colors. I then started following several beauty influencers on Facebook and learned some of their techniques. Since I was home, I was able to practice and replicate these makeup looks in my own way. And I became good at it!

A friend told me I should apply at MAC cosmetics. I doubted my skills but asked friends to come get their makeup done so I could have a portfolio. I applied and got the job. I honed my skills and was eventually able to branch out on my own! For 12 years now, I have been a makeup artist specializing in beauty and bridal makeup. Makeup in now my full time career!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. Theodore Roosevelt stated, “comparison is the thief of joy.” I often found myself comparing my passion to others, comparing the amount of followers I have, how many clients I have, etc. But I found my own footing and realized that everyone’s journey is not the same. I’ve had years where I have been booked and busy and years where I only did a 3-4 wedding that year but I stayed the course.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional makeup artist specializing in beauty and bridal makeup. I think what sets me apart is the care I take of the whole client. I don’t just apply makeup! I have an individualized approach for make up. I understand that I may need to address and add makeup to your neck and décolletage. The techniques I use on a teen with acne prone skin going to prom is not the same I would use on a grandmother getting glammed up for her 80th birthday party.

I have applied makeup on cancer patients who has skin has changed due to chemotherapy and they don’t know how to apply the makeup, I’ve serviced clients with facial burns who want to feel like the belle of the ball. I’ve service clients with extreme tans!

I am proud that I am able to service clients of all ages, genders and skin types. My clients trust me because they are not just another face. People are not afraid of coming to me because I do not take a cookie cutter approach. This makes me proud to be a MUA!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people don’t know that I am now a full time makeup artist! I am available at anytime!!!
