Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Taiman.
Hi Laura, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Lima, Peru. I started my career as a dentist in Lima where I graduated from Cayetano Heredia University in 1997. My passion for diagnostics drove me to complete a Masters Degree in Dental Radiology from the State University of Campinas in Brazil in 2003. After several years of owning my own practice in Peru, life and love relocated me to the United States where I got married and started a family. However, I missed working at what I enjoy the most, and decided to go back to school and get my Dental degree in the USA. I applied and was accepted at the International Dental Graduate Program at Nova Southeastern University in South Florida. These were very hard years given that I was a mother of three, where I felt that it was impossible to give my 100% to be the best mother, wife and student! After three long years, I received my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and graduated int he top 15% of my class in May 2014. I then pursued and completed a specialty program in Endodontics at the same university graduating in May 2016.
In 2016, my husband’s job took us to Dallas from Florida. And just like that, we moved our entire family to this beautiful city that we have called home for the last 9 years. We could not have planned to live in a better place! Here in Dallas, we found a wonderful community, we made so many friends and felt at home right away. During the first two years I worked in an endodontics practice in Rockwall. I loved the job but not the commute, especially because my husband was always traveling for work and that left me alone to take the kids back and forth to school in North Dallas. My poor kids were most always the last to be picked up from after school!
My dream has always been to own my own practice and in 2018, I quit my job as an associate and decided to build my own practice, close to home! We were lucky to find a beautiful space for sale in the perfect area, the backbone of Dallas, Preston Road. I got involved in the design of the office and chose every material and researched to ensure that the office was equipped with the latest and greatest technology. It took us several months and inspections to get the office ready. The big day for us was June 7th, 2019 when we had our open house and officially opened our doors to patients. We started slow but it did not take long for dentists in the area to start referring their patients to us. We only closed the office for one week when Covid hit Dallas. We were taking care of emergencies and patients in pain until general dentists opened their doors again.
Thankfully we overcame the challenge and have continue to grow the practice. During the last six and a half years we have seen over 6000 patients and our focus has always been providing excellent treatment with a successful outcome for our patients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We opened our Endodontics specialty practice with uncertainty. Being relatively new to the Dallas area, we had to build up our relationships and reputation with referring dentists and the community at large. The business started slow but eventually grew and we expanded the office from 3 chairs to 4 in order to accommodate the growing demand for specialized root canal treatment. Nine months after opening, Covid hit Dallas and that was a period of uncertainty. Luckily we persevered and have grown our practice through focus on excellent, patient centric treatment.
