Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Herrera.
Hi Vanessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Vanessa, and I am originally a small town girl who moved to Dallas over ten years ago. I’ve always dreamed of being in the beauty industry, though for a long time I didn’t see it as a “practical” career path. As I grew up, I explored different industries, but I always felt a pull back to beauty.
Right after high school, I decided to stop fighting that feeling and fully commit to my passion. I enrolled at the Aveda Institute in Dallas, where I earned my cosmetology license. At 18, I began my career in the makeup industry and instantly fell in love not only with the artistry itself but with the relationships I was able to build and the confidence I helped others feel.
A few years into my career, the pandemic hit, and like many in the industry, I found myself without work. It was a challenging time, but I trusted that there was a greater plan for me. Not long after, an unexpected opportunity opened up at a salon in Dallas. I went into the interview with an open mind and quickly discovered a new passion for hair extensions and the salon environment.
Over the next few years, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about extensions and building my clientele. Eventually, I decided to take the leap and open my own suite. It was terrifying at first, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Now, more than two years into working for myself, I’ve been able to focus deeply on my artistry and create an environment where my clients feel seen, valued, and beautiful. The journey has had its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited for everything still ahead.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many in my industry, I’ve experienced the common struggles- navigating the uncertainty of the pandemic, dealing with the physical toll that comes with long hours and back pain, and putting in the work to build a loyal clientele from the ground up.
But one of the more personal challenges I faced early on was being perceived as “too shy,” “too quiet,” or “too nice.” At times, I felt like I had to prove myself even more to show that I was capable, confident, and serious about my craft. My kindness was sometimes taken advantage of, and that was a tough lesson to learn.
Over time, though, I’ve grown to see those same traits as some of my greatest strengths. I’ve learned that being soft-spoken doesn’t mean lacking confidence – it means creating a calm, welcoming space where people feel comfortable. Many of my clients now tell me they appreciate that energy and I think it’s become part of what sets me apart. It’s been a process of learning to own who I am, both personally and professionally, and finding power in the qualities that once felt like setbacks.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in hand-tied and I-tip extensions, focusing on creating soft, natural results that enhance my clients’ features. I also love doing layered haircuts, bouncy blowouts, and makeup services, whether it’s for a special occasion or just a confidence boost.
Beyond the services, I love creating a space that feels like a girls’ day, with good movies, snacks, and drinks. Where clients can relax, unwind, and enjoy being pampered.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that the finer things in life are earned through hard work and dedication. Nothing in this industry is handed to you. There’s a common idea that doing hair is an “easy” career, but the truth is it takes years of practice, patience, and persistence to grow. It’s not just about creating something beautiful in the moment, it’s about constantly learning, building relationships, and pushing yourself to grow. I’ve learned that with passion and love for what you do, anything is possible. When you stay grounded, humble, and focused on your craft, growth and success follow.
