We recently had the chance to connect with Cynthea and have shared our conversation below.
Cynthea, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Recently I’ve enjoyed watching Kaizo streams. Although I am not a gamer, I enjoy watching someone else play the game and reading the comments. Everyone is so nice in the chat and welcoming it gets entertaining the more you watch.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Cynthea and I make handmade curated jewelry inspired by fandoms, books and anything that brings me joy. Although I started my business under another name, I am currently rebranding. That does not mean my work is changing, my inspirations remain the same and wanting to share my journey with others. You might see a piece from your favorite book, movie, show, flower, song or perhaps a video game. I have an overthinking mind which means I am always coming up with ideas and piecing things together. My jewelry finds you when you least expect it. I am a hidden gem and when you find it, I hope it brings you as much joy as it brought me creating my jewelry items.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
As a little girl I was in pageants growing up, so winning trophy’s and wearing crowns made me feel invincible and beautiful. Some competitions I won and felt like I was on top of the world and others I didn’t, but I looked pretty doing it even if I lost. I learned to be confident in myself and hold my head high regardless of the outcome.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I love this question because I’m currently learning how to transmute my pain into power. My pain is what keeps me going, it reminds me what happened in my life is real. I know I don’t have to keep suffering, so I’ll feel the hurt and the pain, but I’m going to make something beautiful out of it. Pain is dirt and I’m planting the seeds to see how much my flowers will grow.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I can be very ambivert depending on my environment, but I’m still going to show up as myself. I have a lot of personality in me that can be too loud or too quiet. I want people to see the real me even when I’m trying to hide when I’m shy. I’ve learned to balance myself and adapt to any changes that come my way.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
My mind is a puzzle, so it can be misunderstanding at times when trying to know me. Have an open mind and heart and you’ll see how each bead is telling a story with every pattern. That is what my rebrand is about for Mercurial Night Designs. One thing I’m learning is as confusing as my life may be, not everything needs to be understood, but only felt. I hope that as my creativity flourishes others will either see or feel what story is being told.
