Today we’d like to introduce you to Tai Colon.
Hi Tai, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into interior design was not a straight line, but it was definitely meant to be. I have always been drawn to creating beautiful spaces. Even as a child, I was rearranging rooms, playing with color, and paying attention to how a space could make someone feel. I did not realize it then, but I was already studying design.
Years later, what started as helping friends and family with their homes naturally grew into something bigger. I discovered that people were not just looking for a pretty room. They were looking for clarity, confidence, and someone who could bring their vision to life. That is when I knew this was more than a passion. It was a calling.
I launched Three Hummingbirds Design with that purpose in mind. I wanted to build a luxury design brand that felt personal and human, where clients are involved, heard, and excited every step of the way. I believe that interior design should feel collaborative, not intimidating. Every project is a partnership, and every home has a story worth honoring.
Fast forward to today, we have completed countless transformations across the DFW area and beyond. More than ninety percent of our clients come from referrals, which is one of the biggest compliments we could receive. We have expanded into commercial spaces, short term rental design, and curated lifestyle spaces, although the heart of our mission has never changed. We want to help families fall in love with where they live.
It has been a journey of passion, hard work, and a lot of faith. I am grateful every day that I get to do what I love. Design spaces that feel like home.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been rewarding, but it has not always been smooth. Like many small business owners, especially in the creative field, I had to learn a lot through experience. In the beginning, I was juggling every role at once. Designer, project manager, scheduler, customer service, marketing, and accountant. It was exciting, but it was also a lot of responsibility to carry while trying to grow the business and stay present for my family.
One of the biggest challenges was learning how to set boundaries. When you love what you do, it is very easy to give and give without realizing you are running on empty. I had to learn how to protect my time, charge appropriately for my expertise, and create a structure that allowed projects to run smoothly without sacrificing my well being. Once I implemented systems, pricing clarity, and communication standards, everything shifted. Clients still receive the same warmth and collaboration, but with a process that keeps the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Another challenge was confidence. The design industry can feel intimidating, especially when you are building your brand in a market with so much talent. I had to learn to trust my own voice and the vision that makes Three Hummingbirds Design unique. The more I leaned into what makes us different, rather than trying to blend in, the more aligned clients began to find us.
Every struggle along the way taught me something valuable. It shaped the structure of the business, the client experience, and the strength and resilience behind the brand. I would not change any part of the journey because each lesson helped me grow into the designer and entrepreneur I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Three Hummingbirds Design. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Three Hummingbirds Design is a full service interior design firm based in Dallas Fort Worth. We focus on luxury residential spaces and high end short term rentals, and we are known for creating interiors that feel vibrant, sophisticated, and deeply personal to the families who live in them. Every space we design has intention behind it. Nothing is selected simply to fill a room. Everything is chosen to support function, comfort, beauty, and the lifestyle of the client.
What truly sets us apart is the way we invite our clients into the process. Many luxury design firms present a final plan and make all selections without the homeowner’s involvement. Our philosophy is different. We believe the home should reflect the client, not the designer. Clients collaborate with us every step of the way. We curate options that align with their goals and style so they can make confident decisions without feeling overwhelmed. It is luxury design with heart and partnership.
Brand wise, I am most proud of the emotional impact our work creates. Of course the before and after is exciting, but what fills me with the most pride is when clients tell us they finally feel at peace in their home, or that their space feels like a sanctuary, or that their guests cannot stop complimenting the transformation. To me that is true success. A beautiful space that makes someone feel something.
We offer design services for full home transformations, individual rooms, new construction, renovations, commercial spaces, and short term rental properties. For STRs specifically, we focus on creating destination style interiors that photograph well, drive bookings, and elevate the guest experience. Many of our clients come to us when they want their property to stand out and command higher nightly rates.
What I want readers to know about our brand is simple. Three Hummingbirds Design is built on trust, collaboration, and craftsmanship. We listen. We guide. We care about the details. And we pour our heart into creating spaces that feel warm, elevated, and unforgettable. When you work with us, you are not just receiving a design service. You are investing in a home that supports your lifestyle, brings you joy, and feels like your favorite place in the world.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned on my journey is that growth happens when you are willing to bet on yourself. There were many moments in this business where it would have been easier to play it safe, shrink a little, or wait for the perfect moment. The turning points came when I chose faith over fear and trusted that my talent, my work ethic, and my purpose were enough.
I also learned that success is not just about beautiful designs. It is about relationships. Interior design requires trust, communication, and emotional intelligence just as much as creativity. The more I focused on caring for clients, listening to their needs, and creating a process that made them feel supported and excited, the stronger the business became.
Another lesson that has shaped my journey is the power of boundaries. Protecting my time, my energy, and the value of my work has allowed me to serve clients at a higher level. When you respect your own craft, others learn to respect it too.
Every chapter of this journey has taught me something, but the biggest takeaway is that you flourish when you lead with intention, serve with heart, and show up as your authentic self. That has been the foundation of everything I have built at Three Hummingbirds Design.
