Hidden Gems: Meet Laurie Miller of Apple Care and Companion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Miller.

Laurie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Dallas, graduated from The Greenhill School and The University of Texas at Austin. I spent 20 years working in my family’s 100 year old business. I eventually came to the realization that I wanted my work to make a difference for people. I kept thinking about my grandparents, who were able to stay in their own home as they aged because of compassionate caregivers who protected their independence with dignity.

In 2006, my Mom and I founded Apple Care & Companion. Today, Apple Care is a true family business, run by me and my husband, Mark. Our focus is on helping older adults age safely at home. We provide personal care, companionship, dementia support, meal prep, medication reminders, and the everyday assistance that brings comfort and stability. Our mission has always been to offer affordable, loving care while giving families peace of mind. Our caregivers become trusted partners for both the client and their family.

Over the years, I’ve also been a caregiver myself. First for my Mom, and now for my in-laws. These experiences have taught me empathy, resilience, and how deeply families need guidance and support. This perspective led me to expand my work through Age Tech Now, a curated resource that helps families and professionals navigate aging technology, and Conversation Ready NTX, which encourages people to talk about end-of-life wishes before a crisis.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges in the caring industry is compassion fatigue, something caregivers (family and professional) rarely talk about. Caring for clients while also caring for my own family meant I was “on” all the time. I had to learn how to set boundaries, ask for help, and build systems so my work could grow without burning me out.

The homecare industry brings its own hurdles: the nature of staffing, complex family dynamics, and helping people understand that home care shouldn’t start only in crisis. I also faced the challenge of changing perceptions around aging technology, which ultimately inspired Age Tech Now as a way to simplify decision-making for stressed families.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Not sure what is needed in this space!

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is dignity, independence, and meaningful connection. I believe older adults deserve to age the way they choose, making their own choices, if they’re able. Caregivers deserve clarity, support, and community.

At Apple Care & Companion, what matters is care that feels like family. At Age Tech Now, it’s providing trusted guidance in a confusing landscape. And with Conversation Ready NTX, it’s helping people talk about what matters most long before they need to.
Across all my work, my goal is simple: help families feel less stressed, more prepared, and more supported as they navigate aging and caregiving.
