Conversations with Channelle Colbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Channelle Colbert.

Hi Channelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Nails have always been apart of me. When I was little I would go to the nail salon with my Cousin and watch her get her nails done. When I became older, I wasn’t allowed to get my nails done. My mom just didn’t trust it and I understand why so she told me if I ever wanted to get my nails done. I would need to pay to get my nails done myself so essentially once I became with age, I got a job and I started getting my nails done. I think my obsession with nails probably came when I was in like my 20s early 20s because every time I would go to the nail salon or get my nails done buy my nail tech I would bring my own polish to my appointment. One time at my appointment I told her, like I want my own nail polish brand who would have thought like us having that conversation motivated me into me actually doing nails, and like I said, always been interested in intrigued in the intricate designs, the colors, creativity, boldness, expression. All of that good stuff so essentially I decided to enroll in nail school during Covid. Yes. Nail school was hard because I was working third shift overnight. It was very strenuous on my body and then I had to go to class like a few hours later thank God that at the time school was hybrid, which was a good thing. and a bad thing. Now when I first started school, it was in person and then we lost a teacher, gained a teacher. lost a teacher it was just a lot going on. In all I was able to complete my hours and finish school so the hard part was over with. I got my 600 hours. Now the next step was for me to take the test to get my license and there’s two tests now I completed school June 2021. I didn’t take my license test until February 2022 and that was the written exam pass on the first try and then you gotta wait. I believe a couple days And then you can schedule your practical exam. I did the practical exam I believe in March passed that and waiting for my license to come in the mail. Prior to getting my license, I had already been interested in nails so while I’m at my nail appointments, I’m watching what my nail techs are doing like I’m paying attention. I reached back out to one of my nail tech and back in Milwaukee and we were having a conversation I was just like yeah I think I wanna get into nails and she was like you should do a Channe. You should do it. Even the new friends that I made out here I’m telling them like I really want to do nails. I wanna do nails if get into the beauty industry it would be nails. I started ordering products offline and just started practicing, looking at YouTube reaching out to my you know local nail tech out in here in Dallas, reaching back out to my nail tech in Milwaukee and just asking questions this was 2018-2019. I’m out of school, I am trying to essentially get people to let me you know practice on them I’m doing as much practicing on myself as I can. I got my practice hand. I’m practicing on my friends, family, whoever will really let me. I’m either charging nothing or I’m charging $25-$35. I had to put nails on hold because the job I had was not working. I got back incorporate and I didn’t last that long. and then I end up getting something else incorporate and it wasn’t fulfilling. I was there for maybe like 9 months maybe. Something told me try again with nail salons. I went on indeed and found 2 Salons. One nail salon was like a natural nail salon so clean products, nontoxic products, gel, manicures, regular manicures, pedicures, dry, manicures. Then the other nail salon I specialize in Gel-X and Acrylic nail services along with offering a gel, manicures and pedicure services. Both of those opportunities came to an end within like six months. I hit the ground running promoting looking for nail models and trying to do collaborations with people. Also doing interviews like this getting people to read my story and learn about me and doing vendor events. Building clientele has been really hard because for me unfortunately between 2021-now I’ve been all over the city of Dallas from Plano to Midlothian. But here in 2025 we built our home nail salon, which I am super excited. The salon was completed late September as far as construction and we are open currently for services, but we are in the process decorating

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been an easy road. With school they only teach you and prepare for licensing. Good you know the education put can’t get the process correct so that’s where continuous practice comes into play with honing my nail skills. I had lost my corporate job didn’t get another until 6 months later. Moved in December 2021 then moved in January 2022. A lot of these were all happening at once but I was told to focus on what you can control. I switched gears and just focused and studied extra hard for passing test coming in Feb 2022. Even working at one the Salons parking was an headache, I’m getting parking tickets coming to work, that’s how bad parking was.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
