Today we’d like to introduce you to Heavenly-Joy.
Hi Heavenly-Joy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It was nothing I’ve thought about doing overnight. I would more so like to think of it as an inheritance. The art of naturality that emerges from the human body, and it’s AMAZING for the different strands that blooms astonishingly from the different skin types and ethnicities. As a kid, the pressing comb and the flat iron was a trend in my community and later became a bad habit. Not knowing how to properly care for 3A-4C hair led us to heat damage, hair breakage, and lost roots of our heritage. In 2018, I did “the big chop” and cut off all of my heat damaged hair. It took patience and discipline to care for the natural curls I was born with. Doing hair was a side-hustle in many generations on both sides of my family, so it was really no surprise when I began to partake in learning. The only difference is, the craft of cosmetology was a side job to my elders, but to me, it’s a lifestyle. I’m more than ready to extend my adventures with the creation woven from God’s hands to mine, and to inspire generations now and generations to come. Cutting off my hair led me into testing out different products that would agree with my hair type, then eventually led to me formulating my own products and business entity by the summer of 2020. Slayed Productions.Co is a natural, herbal Health & Beauty Company. Here at Slayed Productions.Co, we aim to glorify; redeem; and rectify the true definition of beauty by learning, acknowledging, and accepting who we are as individuals and a collective people; innerstanding the power we hold individually; reclaiming our power; and upholding necessity for our journey back to our most healthy, intuitive and authentic selves. My products are made from 100% plants, herbs and natural oils to soothe and satisfy all skin types and hair types of melanin persons. No added dyes, chemicals, fragrances, or parabens. Slayed Productions.Co goes beyond the herbalistic care of health and natural beauty. We aspire to inspire and empower from our previous generations of our elders and indigenous ancestors, to our younger generations and future generations to come. As a community, we must continue to learn, educate our peers, build and expand— internally and externally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a challenge to receive funding and being denied for business loans because of my age and credit; As well as being overlooked when applying for small business grants. I know the right opportunity will present itself in divine timing, and with much dedication.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an Entrepreneur. Since graduating high school, I’ve made a promise to myself that I’d fulfill and experience every aspect of life. From drawing and creative clothing design, to cosmetology, Vocal/Singing Artist, Culinary Arts (Currently Preparing For School); I’ve even fulfilled some logical and practical career options. From Certified Nursing Assistant, to Phlebotomy, Marketing, Life Insurance, and Real Estate. I’ve also worked general nine to five jobs, mostly working in customer service, as a receptionist, and a delivery driver.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I absolutely LOVE my city (Detroit, MI). There’s so much creative history that has created doorways for today’s society. Not just creatively, but the heart and hustle of my city— rebuilding and rebranding for my melanin communities. However, the lack of trust and awareness that some people possess, contributes to a lot of community downfall.
