Rising Stars: Meet Dhaisha Mitchell of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dhaisha Mitchell.

Dhaisha , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up crochet / arts in general was a huge part of my childhood. It was an outlet to help me express myself creativity and also help with anxiety and depression I didn’t know I had . I’ve always crocheted small items for myself , until a few online friends durning covid suggested that I should start posting and selling my work. I took it into serious consideration and started my business in 2020 under the name “my crochet closet “ . It immediately took off online, I was beginning to grow a following on multiple social media platforms. And experimenting with my crafts seeing what my audience truly liked. In October 2021, my family went through a tragedy when I lost my mother. I took a small break break from everything, rebranding my business and changed my name to “Lifesknotsobad “ because they tragedy and all the bad things that happens in life, it could be worse, but at the moment life is not so bad after all. With the change I really hope to teach people and myself to be grateful for what you have now and not dwell on the past. In the future, I want to teach people about crocheting and how it is an outlet to help you no matter what you’re going through mentally physically in life it’s a way to escape your reality for just a few moments.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not , most success stories has a bumpy path . the bumpy roads doesn’t stop you from continuing on with your goal it reminds you to keep going into stride harder than you ever had. Some struggles I face in my business look like sourcing certain materials needed for certain order. Also having trouble with my local post as far as losing packages. And having to track down packages to get them to my customers… Isabella is struggling with my own mental health. Some days are dark and it is hard to continue to keep going, but I remind myself of what I have on the line. My business motivates me to keep going no matter what’s going on around me. It makes me look forward to creating every day.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I feel most people know me before my quality of work and how neat and precise my stitches are no matter what I’m making.. if I could remember, the first thing that I went viral for were my ruffle or fluff style design hats. I started making them in 2020, I was inspired by a very well-known crochet designer in Chicago that I had followed for years, and I took inspiration from her work. The design of the hat is very free flowing and different. You don’t typically see hats like this on your day-to-day. They are totally expressive to the person you can get them in any color or style that you want. I personally enjoy making the ruffle or fluff hats because creating ruffles is a process in itself. It’s a very tedious in long tiring process, but in the end it’s worth it. Every stitch and every ruffle has a story in itself , every ruffle is different. Most people who follow me or know me they know that I am known for my different style of hats. I’m personally most proud of my clothing garments that I have made over the years. It takes a certain skill to master to create something in different sizes for different people.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Patience you can’t rush the process of something that you’re creating . You have to have patience for yourself and craft that you’re doing. Without teaching myself patience I would have gave up a long time ago, that doesn’t just apply to crocheting or my business just a life in general. Being your own biggest credit another lesson I’ve learned is giving myself grace. It’s OK to make mistakes and learn from them. It’s all about how you pick yourself up and continue to move forward.
