Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelli Bishop.
Hi Shelli, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Thank you so much for thinking of me. My name is Shelli Bishop. I graduated from Ferris State University and was an X-Ray and CT scan technologist for 15 years prior to being a hairstylist. I enjoyed my career caring for patients.
I started off training as an apprentice hair stylist 11 years ago. I was looking to do it as a hobby and honestly a little bit of a distraction as my husband and I were trying to have a child and struggling with infertility.
When I graduated from my hair apprenticeship, we adopted our first son and we now have three beautiful boys. I had to learn patience on starting a family. Channing, Charlie, and Taylor were definitely meant for us.
I ended up falling in love with the Salon atmosphere. I loved the bright sunshine coming in the windows and interactions with my clients.
I opened up Deep Roots three years ago. My vision was a vintage inspired salon that felt welcoming to our guests.
I saw a letter that a family friend posted on Facebook. It was from 70 years ago. I knew instantly that I wanted to decorate with it in the salon. It was a love letter about being together forever and ever.. I was able to get a copy of it and it hangs up in our salon in a picture frame on a collage wall.
Our goal at Deep Roots Salon is to provide a one of a kind experience to help enhance their inner beauty.
We want them to feel loyalty, honesty, luxury, and love every time they step inside.
We now have seven stylist behind the chair and two receptionist. All of our ladies are very kind and have hearts of gold. I am lucky and grateful to work alongside them. My mom and dad are very active in helping out at the salon as well. It definitely feels like home.
Thank you so much for your time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a hair stylist and salon owner was never on my radar or bucket list. I was pretty sporty growing up and focused on athletics. I am so grateful to love my career. I don’t think everyone gets to wake up every day and do what they love.
Opening my Salon has been a smooth road. I have lots of great family support and our community has been amazing.
My dad, uncle and his crew, helped with the renovations. I know that the Salon would not have opened so quickly with out these two men on the front of the construction.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been a hair stylist for 10+ years. I specialize in balayage hair coloring. I work behind the chair five days a week doing mostly hair coloring. I have an amazing and supportive clientele.
When I’m not behind the chair; I work on our schedules, team management, ordering, donations, and salon goals. On my days off, I enjoy time with my boys. I have a healthy work and family time balance.
My salon family and I keep up on our education by going to as many classes and shows as we can.
I am the most proud of the team I have. My team has been there for each other through thick and thin. If there is ever a hard moment at the salon, or in one of our personal lives, each and every one of my stylist will help the other recover and heal.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is snuggling up on the couch on Sundays, with a big blanket and my mom, watching movies and enjoying snacks with her. My three little boys are huge snugglers now. I hope they always feel the comfort that I did and still do from my Mom.
Growing up I played basketball all the time. My parents never missed a game. I am so grateful for my Mom and Dad always support what ever endeavor I take on.
They were proud of my first career at the hospital and are a big part of my Salon. I look forward to seeing my dad sitting on my salon stool waiting for me every morning to say “Hi.”My Mom helped me decorate the salon before we opened. We poured our heart and souls into every nook and cranny.
I loved being a part of a team at an early age. Three of my closest high school teammates and friends still keep in touch 20 years later.
Basketball taught us lessons beyond our years that teamwork, hard work, and perseverance can last a lifetime. It personally taught me how to be a leader, discipline, and the true value of friendship.
