Inspiring Conversations with Annie Hillman of 1428 Financial

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Hillman.

Hi Annie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before starting my business, I worked in winery accounting, and while it was fun and interesting, but I wanted more flexibility and freedom. In 2020, a friend of my husband’s approached me about doing bookkeeping on the side, and I thought it would be a great way to earn some extra cash. Little did I know that this would be the start of my business. After doing his bookkeeping for a couple months, I quickly realized how much I loved helping small business owners so I decided to take the leap and pursue my own business. Six months later, I was able to quit my job and go all in on my business. Fast forward a couple years, and now we have a team of four, and get to help entrepreneurs know and love their numbers through bookkeeping and tax services.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My dad was a teacher and my mom was a stay at home mom, so I didn’t have a single clue what it meant to own a business. One thing I’ve learned about entrepreneurship is that it means you are constantly learning something new. I love accounting, but marketing is not my strong suit. The problem there is that you have to market to bring in clients and you have to bring in clients to run a business. Learning those skills was a struggle for me, and one that I will continue to work on most likely forever. But the constant learning is also one of my favorite parts about being a business owner! I feel like I am always being challenged and I love the growth that comes with it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started 1428 Financial because I wanted to help business owners know and love their numbers. I think there is a huge gap in knowledge for business owners when it comes to finances, and our mission is to change that. There is so much value in being confident in the story your finances are telling, and being able to use that data to run your business is important. We offer bookkeeping and tax services for entrepreneurs and small businesses. We’re not just here to provide reports and make sure your bookkeeping is accurate (though we do do that) – we want to be your guiding hand so that you can truly understand your numbers.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I didn’t set out to work in accounting. When I started college, I wanted to become a math teacher because I loved math and because I would have weeks and holidays off. Little did I know there was a whole world of entrepreneurship that would allow me the flexibility to be with my family when I wanted to be, but I’d also be able to work with numbers and educate (in a different way) – it was a win win!
