Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Taylor.
Lauryn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I believe my interest for fashion began with my mother. Growing up, I watched her create our clothes and I was fascinated by her sewing skills since she was self taught. I eventually started learning how to sew and read patterns, and I began sewing small garments on our home machine. I also enjoyed hand sewing and creating new clothing ideas for my dolls. My mom taught me all the basics, and that was really special. Home sewing has become a lost art so I’m very grateful to have learned at a young age.
Watching Project Runway inspired me to pursue fashion as a career, as it showcased the creativity of contestants and their ability to bring their designs to life. This inspiration led me to major in fashion design, as I had always been a creative who enjoyed painting and drawing. Initially, I focused on designing everyday women’s wear, but I also have a background in alterations and up-cycling. After graduating, I immediately entered the bridal industry and have been working in bridal ever since. Now, I design both bridal and evening wear.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I learned a lot about the fashion industry during my internships. I discovered that fashion isn’t always glamorous and straight success to runway. There were times, especially during my school years, when I questioned whether fashion was truly my passion. At that point, I had other interests and considered pursuing them. I never wanted to feel burnt out doing what I love. I believe it was simply having the confidence to believe in my abilities and follow my dream despite the doubts. I also learned that my skill level could only improve with practice. I had to learn to allow myself to let my creations come to life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in women’s apparel, currently with a primary focus on bridal and evening wear. I’ve always wanted to offer luxury inspired and unique pieces that are affordable. I also knew going into the industry that representation matters. The sentiment behind “be the change you want to see in this world” always resonated with me.
I’m most proud of being authentic in my craft, still expressing my style and aesthetic while creating one-of-a-kind garments. What sets me apart is my commitment to quality. I maintain an ethical and slow fashion approach to my garments.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people who know me or my work might not realize is that I often draw inspiration from sources like architecture, nature, and even abstract art. The intricate patterns and fluid movements. I love texture!
I’m constantly inspired by the people in my life too. They sometimes shape and influence my decisions, and I often try to incorporate them into my designs.
