Hidden Gems: Meet LaShonda Reese of Suffering In Silence

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaShonda Reese.

Hi LaShonda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Marshall, Texas—a small town where opportunities felt scarce and expectations were often low. Because of that, immediately after graduation in 2009, I left for the US Army. I wanted more for myself and to avoid becoming another statistic. The military gave me structure, discipline, and a broader view of the world—but even then, something was missing. In 2022, I decided to get serious about my faith journey and that changed everything. For the first time, I truly understood my worth. That spiritual awakening lit a fire in me to help other women discover theirs. In 2024, I founded Suffering In Silence, a nonprofit dedicated to inspire underprivileged women to see their value and self-worth within themselves through education, life skill workshops, health and safety resources, and a supportive community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not, but was it worth it, yes! If it were easy, I wouldn’t have valued and appreciated the journey as much. The biggest struggle was not having an identity because I settled for anything in the past that I thought was beneficial for my own gain. Another struggle was not valuing myself (self-worth), which left me empty every single time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Suffering In Silence is a faith based nonprofit organization that socially connects underprivileged women to inspire them to live a purposeful life and see the value and self-worth within themselves by providing education, life skill workshops, health and safety resources, and a supportive community. Our organization takes pride in meeting women where they are because we all have a story and are here on this earth for a specific purpose. We want readers to know that we serve underprivileged women who’ve been affected by domestic violence, homelessness, and women that are single mothers.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to never look down on someone and their journey that they’re on because you never know when/if you may find yourself in the same situation.
