We’re looking forward to introducing you to Christopher Hill. Check out our conversation below.
Christopher, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Absolutely. I’m confident in my abilities as a musician and as a producer. I show up prepared, surround myself with likeminded musicians who I believe are more talented than myself, and I always think about serving the music first. I believe if most musicians have that mindset, they’ll work for the rest their lives
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Christopher Hill, but most people just call me “Chill.” I’m a drummer and producer from Fort Worth, TX with over 15 years in the industry. I play in several bands across the metroplex and have been fortunate to collaborate with artists from all over the world.
I release original music under the name Chill Hill — a project that’s really just me and my friends creating the kind of art we love and sharing it with whoever digs it. With my own music, I’m always chasing something fresh and unique while still keeping a signature sound that you can recognize as mine.
Right now, I’m working on a new EP set to drop in mid-to-late January. It’s a big step forward from my first record, which blended jazz, fusion, electronic, R&B, and hip-hop influences. This new project is me pushing myself even further, experimenting with new textures and merging the elements I love most: the soul of J Dilla, the energy of electronic and dance music, and the warmth of neo soul. Sonically, it’s fun, dynamic, and a whole new chapter for me.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Phew… what a question. Without getting too detailed, I’d say the biggest shaper of my world view was the experience of losing my mother and grandmother within just a couple of months of each other. At 15, I had to move states and essentially start over from scratch. I’m incredibly blessed, though — my family is solid as a rock, and their love and support carried me through that season.
That experience forced me to grow up fast. I went inward, learned how to navigate my emotions, and ended up discovering a lot about myself — and about people in general — in a very short amount of time. It shaped who I am today in ways I’m still grateful for.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell myself that you should walk in the confidence and power that’s already in you. And that it doesn’t come from anyone’s validation. Take control over your self image.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The music industry tells itself, and artists, that they value art. They don’t. They value what sells. If you’re making them money, then they are invested. Once that well runs dry…. I mean…. We’ve seen what happens to artists when they try to take back control of their art
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Oh absolutely! I always try to give my best when I’m creating. At the end of the day, I make music for myself. it’s my way of expressing what’s going on inside. If people connect with it, I’m grateful and humbled every single time. And if they don’t… That’s totally fine too. Not everything is meant for everyone, and that’s kind of the beauty of it. It just means it wasn’t for them haha.
